A Revealing and Intimate Story of What a Mother Will - and Will Not - Do for Her Daughters

What kind of women do daughters become when their fathers are missing and their mothers can't love them? How do they find love and ways to love themselves?

Nearly three decades of secrets lie between Lola Ashby and the two girls she reluctantly raised. Now, prompted by the one father figure she respects, older daughter Frankie agrees to drive from Portland to visit her ailing mother, who abandoned the girls when they were in high school. When younger daughter Callie announces to Frankie that she's moving her fashion-model career to Los Angeles from the East Coast, Frankie badgers her sister into meeting up in the Idaho panhandle for a family reunion to dilute the impact of their mother's indifference.

However, on Frankie's first night on the road, the trip gets more complicated when a well-dressed elderly woman at a rest stop dumps a young boy in her lap with a request to take him on to Montana. And Callie's exit from Pittsburgh is fraught with its own shady and violent difficulties. Meanwhile Lola strengthens her resolve to keep the past and its secrets where they belong.

Wow

Honestly when I first put it on, I was a bit bored. I made assumptions about where I thought the story would go, and I almost turned it off. For whatever reason, I kept on listening, and boy am I glad I did. The finale of this story had me weeping, so moved by emotion. Lola, Frankie, and Callie became my world as I learned more about their stories and the experiences that shaped their lives. I related a lot to the existentialism in the book - of life being a complicated, chaotic, beautiful thing going everywhere and no where at the same time.
Finally, some reviewer mentioned the book had no real ending. That bothered me when I read it, because no one likes a good story that just dies (I'm looking at you, LOST). I was about 3/4 of the way thru when I saw that review, but decided to keep going. The book does have an ending!! I really enjoyed the end. I really enjoyed the whole book! Well done Jill, and thank you <3

Not captivating

I think if a narrator other than the author read the story, with a bit more inflection in the their voice for each character, it would've been a bit more interesting. I kept waiting for something big to happen in this book or one of the character's issues to be resolved, but neither really happened.

Good story, bad performance

Excellent story. It starts off slow but gets really interesting.
It would have been much better if an actor had read it. Although hearing an author read their own work is usually a good thing, this author was monotonous. A change of voice for different characters would have been ideal. Sometimes it was hard to tell which character was speaking because her voice never changed.

Gripping

I couldn't stop listening to this book. The intricacies of generational trauma all finely woven into well detailed drama.

Loved it.

What a beautiful story. Has a lovely, imperfect and unpredictable ending. Authors voice was calm
And let the words do the work.

nope

I really struggled, the story wasn't horrible but the narration was. I couldn't finish it.
