Publisher's Summary

A woman is forced to question her own identity in this riveting and emotionally charged thriller by the blockbuster best-selling author of The Good Girl, Mary Kubica.

Jessie Sloane is on the path to rebuilding her life after years of caring for her ailing mother. She rents a new apartment and applies for college. But when the college informs her that her social security number has raised a red flag, Jessie discovers a shocking detail that causes her to doubt everything she’s ever known.

Finding herself suddenly at the center of a bizarre mystery, Jessie tumbles down a rabbit hole, which is only exacerbated by grief and a relentless lack of sleep. As days pass and the insomnia worsens, it plays with Jessie’s mind. Her judgment is blurred; her thoughts are hampered by fatigue. Jessie begins to see things until she can no longer tell the difference between what’s real and what she’s only imagined.

Meanwhile, 20 years earlier and 250 miles away, another woman’s split-second decision may hold the key to Jessie’s secret past. Has Jessie’s whole life been a lie, or have her delusions gotten the best of her?

You have GOT to be kidding me!!!!????

This book made me mad! Never have a read a book that made me feel so duped. I wasted hours of my life on this book. I definitely did not expect this from Mary Kubica because I normally like her novels. But I doubt I will ever read another of her novels again. I feel like she is just laughing at her readers with this ridiculous ending!! This was just a pointless, pointless book. Absolutely ridiculous! Don’t continue to read this review it you still plan to read this idiotic book.

Spoiler alert ahead, but I have to warn those who make the right choice to bypass this stupid book. Guess what?! It was all a dream! Yeah she pulled a freaking soap opera ending on us. I am going to try and send this book back because I am furious that I wasted my time. Don’t make the mistake of wasting yours!

Great performance... but the story...?

Both narrators did a great job. I felt like I could really "hear" both characters through them. But the big twist at the end of the story? I don't know, I'm still processing, but I'm not crazy about it. I'm especially not crazy about what Eden does last (well, we find out last. She does it much, much earlier, thanks to the back and forth storyline) I was kind of, almost liking her again at that point, too...

A frustrating read. I didn't hate it, but I definitely didn't love it either. My first book from this author... the jury's still out on whether it will be my last or not.

Heed the description

The book description tells you what you probably would have preferred knowing before listening to the whole book.

The writing is great save for the “twist” or “rabbit hole” as described.

Narrators are lovely as always. Overall it’s a good read, and could have been great if it hadn’t cheated. Which is what it feels like.

Great story....terrible ending

I was drawn in and interested the whole way then the story just dropped off at the end. Love her books but this ending was disappointing to me!

Disappointing

I preordered the audio, having read and enjoyed Kubica's previous books. What everyone refers to as a "twist" in the reviews isn't a twist at all. It's a cheat. It seems like an amateur move on the writer's part. Too bad. I'll try her again, but I won't be preordering.

Awful ending

The story is so intriguing but then the end is such a disappointment. Don’t buy this book if you enjoy in depth closure.

Wonderfully detailed story of love and loss

Mary Kubica does it again! I would hope for traffic on my way to work, just to get to listen a little longer. Wonderfully written, complex characters and superb narration that brought them to life; I could feel their anguish and heartbreak.

Not bad but still disappointing

I have high expectations for Kubica and thus my tagline. I’m disappointed that Kubica turned to such a plot cliche. Past books have included such well written and compelling characters that I found myself disappointed with those in this book. My disappointment though is much more of a reflection of my admiration for Kubica’s other novels than it is for the quality of this one. The plot draws you in and does leave you guessing until the climax. The readers are superb and for the most part I enjoyed it and would recommend it. But only if you’ve read or listened to all her other books first - her other efforts are so much more satisfying.
