Publisher's Summary

Bernadette Fox is notorious. To her Microsoft-guru husband, she's a fearlessly opinionated partner; to fellow private-school mothers in Seattle, she's a disgrace; to design mavens, she's a revolutionary architect, and to 15-year-old Bee, she is a best friend and, simply, Mom.

Then Bernadette disappears. It began when Bee aced her report card and claimed her promised reward: a family trip to Antarctica. But Bernadette's intensifying allergy to Seattle - and people in general - has made her so agoraphobic that a virtual assistant in India now runs her most basic errands. A trip to the end of the earth is problematic.

To find her mother, Bee compiles email messages, official documents, secret correspondence - creating a compulsively readable and touching novel about misplaced genius and a mother and daughter's role in an absurd world.

Bumbling ,Babbling ,Boring

I couldnt finish this book.I couldn't move past the annoying narration of this book.It is a Lifetime level movie at best. There are maybe 3 plot reveals as Elgin has secrets, Manjula has secrets and Bernadette reacts to the world around her. It is tolerable at best.

Overall good

The book/story overall was fantastic. The one issue I have with the book is the performance of the character “Manjula.” The accent was offensive and unrealistic.

Little value

I knew that the reviews were divided on the enjoyment of spending hours reading this book. I’m on the not worth it side. I echo the frustration at the character, the voice and the overall nonsense of the story. I just don’t get the intrigue. These were silly meaningless characters! Two dimensional story that never came to life for me.

Lovely, funny, sad, layered

Read it after the movie. As always the book is better. Well narrated.

Wouldn’t mind a sequel.

This book is laugh out loud funny!

I really, really enjoyed this book. The story was great, and I found myself laughing out loud during my commute on numerous occasions. The narration is also great! Highly recommend.

Unusual narrative

Because this book is dependant so much on written and electronic correspondance, it’s weird read aloud. I think this is one I may have enjoyed more in print.

Interesting story

Really great story. I liked how it was written as letters and emails from the different characters and then the main character added her own bits and pieces to those. Very entertaining as well. A cute story.

Turns into a good one

If you don’t mind not knowing who is who for the first chunk of the book, the book turns out to be quite good.
