Publisher's Summary

Dark secrets from the past bob to the surface in the third novella in the Widow’s Island series.

When a body washes up on the state park beach, Deputy Tessa Black’s experience as a former Seattle detective tells her that the death was not an accident. All evidence points to another murder on the remote island.

The victim is a local contractor with a shockingly long list of enemies. The more locals Tessa interviews, the more people she suspects--from the bitter ex-wife and estranged current wife to disgruntled former clients and employees. They all have different reasons to want him dead.

As Tessa’s investigation heats up, arson and a vicious assault convince her the killer is desperate to hide his crime--and that she’d better solve the case before he claims another victim.

Good suspense

This book has an enjoyable setting and enjoyable characters. The suspense is good. The narration is good but not as enjoyable for me as some.

I've been enjoying this series, but

this book tended towards the trite. Still it's a quick listen and moves a little distance along the story arc. I listened to it as part of Kindle Unlimited so I'm not as unhappy as I would have been if I'd paid for it and it was permanently a party of my library. in that case I'd have been tempted to return it.

i just love a bite-sized story that packs a punch. Melinda manages to set a good background and comprehensive tale in less than 3 hours

Body on the Beach

The third in the series finds Deputy Tessa Black and friend FBI agent, Cate Wilde, investigating the murder of a local construction contractor that washed up on the beach. It seems that Jason McCoy, sole carpenter on the island, was a bully with plenty of enemies, separated from his current wife and notably disliked by his ex-wife. So, the list of suspects continued to grow as the authorities begin to investigate his murder. At the same time, Tessa’s mother who suffers from dementia, is getting worse and Tessa has to think about long term solutions for her care, while also providing for and seeing to the needs of her teenage sister. Tessa and Cate haven’t forgotten about their own friend, Samantha, who disappeared nearly 20 years earlier, and the plea from Samantha’s mother to find her daughter, and have begun pouring over old case files. The investigation of the murdered construction contractor is well done, and as always, I enjoyed the quirky personalities of the folks on Widows Island, the continuing friendships of the people introduced in the first two books and the excellent conclusion of the mystery. Well done!

Disappointed

I usually love these stories! This book was a huge disappointment! Spent the first few chapters recapping the previous books, no mystery no suspense!

I just couldn't get into this one

I love the series just not this story. Maybe it was too short and that is why I was not vested in it

So-so

Of the series it felt as if there is untapped potential. Each of the novellas could have been better developed. The characters were single dementional nd desperately needed fleshing out. The plots raced to a conclusion on each book. AS FOR THE NARRATION............
The narrator appeared, in all 3 books, to be simply reading the texts. Inflection, not to mention the lack of differentiation in characters and their lack of inflection, though occasionally better, left much to be desired.

This series, with fewer dead bodies, could have been much more engrossing. Then again, if it was simply presented as something other than an Audible version, it might have been much better.

I recommend reading this book and not listening to narration. Someone should work on getting a new more theatrical narrator.

Quick suspense

This is a quick story in the Widow’s Island series. A bit of drama and a bit of romance.
