Publisher's Summary

A controversial call to put honor at the center of morality

To the modern mind, the idea of honor is outdated, sexist, and barbaric. It evokes Hamilton and Burr and pistols at dawn, not visions of a well-organized society. But for philosopher Tamler Sommers, a sense of honor is essential to living moral lives. In Why Honor Matters, Sommers argues that our collective rejection of honor has come at great cost. Reliant only on Enlightenment liberalism, the United States has become the home of the cowardly, the shameless, the selfish, and the alienated. Properly channeled, honor encourages virtues like courage, integrity, and solidarity, and gives a sense of living for something larger than oneself. Sommers shows how honor can help us address some of society's most challenging problems, including education, policing, and mass incarceration. Counterintuitive and provocative, Why Honor Matters makes a convincing case for honor as a cornerstone of our modern society.

Great!

Can't say enough good about it. Inspiring. This book will speak to some people as gospel, others as tripe I assume, regardless it's compelling.

Bit shallow

I found this to be a less nuanced discussion than I was hoping for. Friend and I who disagree on the utility of honor culture, were hoping to use this book as a springboard for discussion, both found the book lacked depth.

An interesting point of view on a disliked idea

As a long time listener of Very Bad Wizards podcast, I was eager to listen to this book as soon as i heard about it. I listened to it within a couple days of purchasing. It was a very easy listen, almost like a conversation with the author. Tamler anticipated the questions I had to almost every point made in the book which was helpful! It was very enjoyable, I have definitely come to appreciate honor culture much more than before!

The author proved the opposite of its stated inten

the more I listened to this book, the more I became committed to abandoning concepts of honour, and that I SHOULD judge myself on merits of dignity, instead. the editing seemed poor, there were abrupt pauses, that seemed unnatural and out of place, which made the experience even worse.

This is dryer than a popcorn fart

Looking for an interesting book? Look elsewhere, this book is the most boring book to listen to that I have encountered so far.
