Publisher's Summary

Why would a loving and powerful God allow so much pain and suffering? In Why Suffering? Ravi Zacharias and Vince Vitale carefully walk you through a variety of responses that considered together provide a clear, comprehensive, and convincing answer. Responses like:

  • Where there is the possibility of love, there has to be the reality of freedom, and therefore the possibility of pain.
  • Wishing God had made a different world is to wish yourself out of existence.
  • The cross is the key to a compelling and rational explanation for trusting in God in the face of suffering.
  • In comparison with other world religions, the Christian response is highly distinctive.
  • The reality of evil only makes sense in light of the reality of divine goodness.
  • Relational knowledge about God takes the argument beyond reason to the presence of God amidst suffering.
  • God's decision to allow temporal suffering is understandable when viewed from an eternal perspective.
  • Divine goodness shows how to conquer not in spite of, but even through suffering.

Here is a book written with great respect for the complexity of the issue, recognizing that some who read it will be in the trenches of deep suffering themselves and others questioning the very existence of a loving God. Why Suffering? provides an answer to the problem of pain and suffering with emotional sensitivity and intellectual integrity.

Best time spent / benefit ratio book of my life

This book eclipses Frankel' Man's Search for Meaning as the most beneficial book to my life per time spent reading/listening. I was afraid this book might be boring, but I couldn't wait to finish it. Both author/narrators are wonderful at both tasks. I listened at 1.5 speed and could've bumped that to 2, but didn't actually want to be done because it was so good.

Suffering is a very difficult topic for any world view to explain, and I have spent a lot of time reading and listening to books about it. Why Suffering handles the topic masterfully. It fairly presents the case from major world religions and philosophies and compares their answers to that of Christianity. If nothing else--and it is much more--Why Suffering is an excellent survey of the topic. I wish all my non-fiction books managed to be so deep and yet so brief. You will be smarter and possibly wiser for listening to Why Suffering.

Good Scriptural Study About The Nature of Suffering

I did quite enjoy this book read by both authors. I am a little more partial to Zaharias over Vitale being the reason for 4 stars as opposed to 5. My last book I listened to was The Grand Weaver by Ravi Zacharias which dealt with a very similar subject and I think I liked it a little more. If I had listened to this book first I would have probably given it 5 stars. Either way it is a very insightful look at pain from a apologetic view. I will probably listen to this again within a year or so and not right after another of Ravi's books

Great book, recommendation for sure.

I'm biased. I have been a Razi Zacharias fan for a while. He has an incredible way of fully explaining why he thinks and believes the way he does. Vince Vitale as well has spent a lot of time thinking through his beliefs to best explain how to articulate any given question.

Suffering is a hard subject that has and will affect us all. However, knowing the underlying premise of the question helps with understanding why the question is valid or not.

I hope this book finds someone right in the midst of their suffering to add some comfort and some understanding of why Christianity answers the question with the best explanation.

Excellent perspective.

I think this book can articulate well to the individuals who are skeptical about why God would allow evil in the world. This is an especially good read for those who have trouble coming to terms with the great tragedies as well as the difficulties faced in everyday life.

Wonderful truths shared with love and passion

The only thing that was confusing was when Ravis voice suddently turned into another. and then back. I hadn't realized there were two authers reading the book. But besides that the book was wonderful. such good stories and reasoning. So much truth. the book may give some hope for those who might be fighting their first or one of their first big battles and don't know how things possibly can turn out for the good.

It helps guide you in the right direction.

I struggle with chronic nerve pain in my neck. Through my journey with God and reflecting on what was said in this book, I agree this reading will help connect gaps. I pray whomever comes across this book asking why we suffer, that listening to this story helps them knowing Jesus more than before they read. Thank you!
