Would not recommend to a first time reader of Michael Mcdowell, definitely more when you need more of his work than starting. For starters start with Katie or Guilded Needles. This book has dumb characters doing dumb things and by the time the ending happens you go, well all if this could have been dealt with if anyone critically thought about the events going on around them.
