Determined to put a stop to Hideo's grim plans, Emika and the Phoenix Riders band together, only to find a new threat lurking on the neon-lit streets of Tokyo. Someone's put a bounty on Emika's head, and her sole chance for survival lies with Zero and the Blackcoats, his ruthless crew. But Emika soon learns that Zero isn't all that he seems - and his protection comes at a price.

"Lu’s futuristic world, with its immersive technology, feels dangerously within reach in this action-packed escapade with a thoughtful, emotion-driven core." (Publishers Weekly)

"The plotting is exquisite, with tiny details connecting back to the first book, big twists that never feel forced, and emotional power drawn from character growth. The flawlessly rendered characters anchor the sophisticated themes and world-altering stakes right up to the end game. A fast, intense, phenomenal read." (Kirkus Reviews, starred review)

"There’s plenty of high-stakes double-crossing here, and this finale moves along at a breakneck clip. Series fans will be only too happy to zoom along for the ride." (Booklist)

Compelling characters, plot lacking

I enjoyed the characters but found the plot deeply unsatisfying. The way Zero's existence was explained at the end felt like a cop out. The relationship between Hideo and Emika felt forced in a way that wasn't present in Warcross. It felt like the book had a happy ending that it didn't deserve.

Hideo? more like Light Yagami

I was pretty exited to get to book 2 and was left....bored? Emika was not doing much, not much was happening for most of the book and I didn't get much of my boy Hideo. I wanted this book to be way more dark because of the first book ending and exept for the ending I don't remember much (and I just finish it). The performance was again amazing so it s not her fault

Had trouble finishing part 2

No Spoilers. I enjoyed the first book and as soon as I was done with it, I purchased book 2. I have to be honest, I don't know if it's because everything was NEW in the first book, but I was really interested in the story (during book 1). I found myself getting a little bored with the sequel. The story isn't bad, I just felt as if a lot of the mystery was taken care of with the first book so this one, to me, felt as if it fell a little short.

I am glad that I finished the sequel, at least I got to see how it all turned out, but I really think that maybe I needed a longer break between the 2 books. I'd recommend to anyone who just finished the first book to give themselves some time before the follow up.

So glad I found this series!

This story is intense, emotional, fun, & seriously thrilling. I loved book 1, but 2 is even better!! The characters are diverse & full of life. Their journey full of questionable moments & action with lots of intrigue. The world she has created is one I enjoy coming back to repeatedly. I can not wait for the next release!!! I am so glad I found this series!

Great second book!

Wildcard lived up to Warcross! There weren’t as many Warcross games (only one), which is an aspect of the first book that I loved, but Wildcard made up for it in other ways.

This installment is filled with intrigue, stealth and discovery. It’s more focused on Zero’s past, stopping the algorithm and having your cake and eating it too. Amica is put in the toughest position in her life, warring with her conflicting feels over Hideo and stretched between The Black Coats, Hideo and herself. So many entities around her are grabbing for power while she is just trying to follow her moral compass and do what is right.

This story is an exhilarating one. I loved both the old and new characters, seeing relationships develop, watching the action and plot unfold. This plot gets really complex, complicated and “mind-bendy” in all of the best ways.

I really enjoyed the sub-themes of friendship, redemption, the power of asking for help and relying on others.

Marie Lu, you haven’t let me down!

Performance was great

I really did enjoy the performance. The story was good but at times I found myself a little bored with the second book. I still enjoyed the story but some parts I really wanted to speed up and go faster. I like how the story ended.

Wildcard Book Review

Wildcard was a novel I anticipated to read after having read Warcross. After the amazing first part to Emica's story, I was interested to see what Lu would do next for this character and how she would utilize her video game technology in this novel. The novel was full of interesting and unexpected revelations, and i was intrigued to know more and more about the characters and the fate Lu had for them.

I read this novel in a hurry, as I did with Warcross, in order to have enough of the novel read for Marie Lu's author signing event. I got through over half of the novel in the span of three days. I did not want to stop and wanted to continue listening to this story on Audible. I did not finish this novel until after the signing event but was surprised near the end. This novel gave an ending to the characters' story in a way that the reader/listen does not expect a third novel. It may not be a satisfying ending for some, but I found it to be just right.

Both Warcross and Wildcard were novels that I extremely enjoyed and will be revisiting them and re-reading both of them when I have more time and I am not in graduate school. I want to re-visit both these novels and spend more time with these characters. I want to relive the adventure these characters have to offer. Once more, I recommend both these novels to anyone interested in novels that incorporate video gaming technology.

Audible Review:

Like Warcross, Wilcard is narrated by Nancy Wu who does an excellent job in portraying the second part of Emika's story. Wu's narration captivates the characters and their encounters very well, and I am eager to re-listen to both novels one after the other to get the full adventure all at once. For those of us who like to multitask and listen on the go, I recommend listening at a 1.75 speed, so one does not miss anything. For those who are listening while reading the book, I found  2.5 speed to be the best speeds. 3.0 was too fast for me, and I was missing a lot of what the narrator was saying and had to eventually slow down the narrator's reading speed.

kinda slow...

this book was sort of slow and it took me a while to get through it. a bit too much introspection and a little too much predictability. the story was creative and the narrator was fine.

Very Disappointing

Sigh, what happened? The first book blew me away! It was one of my fav books of last year. But this one, heck no! It was boring, confusing, and just not good. I only liked the gaming and technical side if this story,l. Honestly, I was happy I finished the book. Which, makes me sad. The ending was okay, but still not worth it. I kinda want to pretend the first book was the only one. Even if it would have not answered the questions. Not worth a book credit.
