Publisher's Summary

A woman on the run from her sadistic husband in a stolen million-dollar motor home is trapped in a small town.

This debut novel gives new meaning to the phrase "strong female protagonist" and guarantees to satisfy anyone looking for action, mystery, and unforgettable characters.

Meet Alcima "The Willow" Willoughby. Olympic volleyball player. Six foot six in socks.

After a crippling injury on the volleyball court causes the US to lose gold at Beijing, Alcima’s life spirals into addiction and an abusive marriage. In a rare moment of clarity, she escapes.

In her husband's $2,000,000 RV.

Almost across the country and out of his grasp, Alcima is stopped for a minor traffic infraction. When she pulls off the road, the massive motorhome rolls over, setting off a chain of events that conspire to trap Alcima in a nearby small town during a week of violent rainstorms.

Holed up in an abandoned campground, hunger forces Alcima to venture out, where she meets a local librarian, Booker Thompson. Attracted by Alcima’s fearless nature and offbeat humor, Booker enlists a few of his close friends to help her hide from the dangerous man hot on her trail.

Booker leads Alcima on a harrowing journey to his secluded island, where they tumble into an intense affair. But she soon discovers an even worse fate than being found by her revenge obsessed husband. Uncovering long buried secrets about the town—and Booker—she is inexorably drawn down into a terrifying subterranean world where she comes face-to-face with her fears and her one tragic physical flaw.

Ultimately, she is betrayed, and there is only one thing she can do.

Run.

Great debut book!

I just finished this debut album by actor/author Robert Bockstael, who I first became familiar with on the hit Canadian tv series North of 60, and if it was a paper book I’d say it was one of those books I couldn’t put down!
As it was, listening to it on Audible, I couldn’t wait to wake up and start it playing until the final scene, it was that riveting.
The characters were very unique, definitely not the kind of characters that are cookie cutter, especially the main one, Alcima Willoughby, aka Willow.
I asked the author if there will be a sequel, because in my opinion it needs another Willow story, and he said although it’s not currently in the works, it doesn’t mean there won’t be one somewhere in the future.
So now I have added Robert Bockstael as one of my favourite Canadian authors, next to Mary Lawson and Ann-Marie MacDonald.

Highly recommend it, a ‘must read/listen’!

A suspenseful collision of characters

The back and forth between story plots perfectly collided in the end with an unsuspecting heroine . Full of gritty characters and dark secrets....road trip Fall River anyone?

Masterful Reading of a Top Notch Mystery Novel

I’m picky about who I let in to narrate a story. I will try sample after sample until I find a story and a reader to share that intimate time. Bockstael’s ease of voicing one character and slipping into another is astonishing. Never drawing focus, but always serving the story and it’s momentum. Multiple subplots all feeding into each other. Uniquely and finely drawn characters and fabulous, dark and may I say, fun plot? This novel will please many readers. Bravo Mr. Bockstael!
