Publisher's Summary

Wyoming game warden Joe Pickett encounters bad behavior on his own turf - only to have the FBI and the DOJ ask him to stand down - in the thrilling new novel from number-one New York Times best-selling author C. J. Box.

The good news is that Joe Pickett has his job back, after his last adventure in The Disappeared. The bad news is that he's come to learn that a drone is killing wildlife - and the drone belongs to a mysterious and wealthy man whose grandson is dating Joe's own daughter, Lucy.

When Joe tries to lay down the rules for the drone operator, he's asked by the FBI and the DOJ to stand down, which only makes him more suspicious. Meanwhile, bodies are piling up in and around Joe's district in shocking numbers. He begins to fear that a pack of four vicious killers working on behalf of the Sinaloa cartel known as the Wolf Pack have arrived. Their target seems to be the mystery man and everyone - including Joe, Nate, and others - who are associated with him.

Teaming up with a female game warden (based on a real person, one of the few female game wardens at work in Wyoming today) to confront these assassins, Joe finds himself in the most violent and dangerous predicament he's ever faced.

Well read, and well written.

This was my first introduction to the Joe Pickett character, and I'm glad to have met him, so to speak. Box's titular character is believable and relatable, someone who feels real, as do most of the characters in the book. David Chandler's reading is inspired, capturing all the nuances of the many disparate characters, from a stoic falconer to a sultry yet deadly latino assassin. This makes for a gripping listen from start to finish.

The Violence was just too much

I have read every Joe Pickett book and I was excited to listen to this latest version. 18 Chapters in I just couldn't listen to anymore. Like I said I've listen to all these books. I know there is always going to be some violent scenes, but this book just seems to go to far. The graphic description of the violence is the story. Maybe it's me and with all the violence going on in the world this violent novel was just too much to take in. The writing and characters are excellent but be prepared to listen through a pretty dark story.

How does he do it?

C.J. Box keeps finding ways to make this series better. I keep thinking that there's no way he can top his previous Joe Pickett novel, then he does. This book is incredible. This series has been so much fun to follow. You literally listen to Joe's family grow up.

Pickett's interaction and friendship with Nate is so fun to listen to, and I love the story line. Box found a way to mix modern and advanced technology with the cartels and Wyoming. Let that sit in for a second. I don't know how he does it!

Amazing book that continues and already fantastic series! This has been one of my favorite books of the series so far. David Chandler, by the way, is the voice of this series. He has been consistent, intriguing, and makes listening to the series even more fun.

CJ does it again

Awesome story and CJ Box never let's us down. David Chandler's narration is always excellent. I have listened to all of the audio books and Chandler is the voice of Joe Picket for me. I started reading the Joe
Picket series years ago then started listening to the audio versions. Box's protagonist are endearing Joe and his family and friends seem like people you would love to know personally.. I have never been to Wyoming. but CJ Box paints a beautiful picture of the state. it's majestic mountains and wild life. Joe is some what of an idealist believing in law and order and the rights of people and wildlife. He is often embroiled in dangerous situations because he naively gives everyone the benefit of doubt. but he is clever and not to be under estimated. I also love his friend Nate always there for Joe and family. please CJ give us another Nate story.
Looking forward to you next book. Janice

Box Delivers Again

A mist read for lovers of the Joe Pickett saga. Fast paced and full of the shock value that readers of the series have come to expect. Well done.

Meh. Slow paced

The book had good character development, but was pretty slow paced. It was also hard to believe at times.

Is this a C.J. Box book?

Where is the love of his state,his job ? This story is not a Pickett mystery,,it's too bloody,,too rough,,,not Joe's smooth,,get in,,get out,,set it set up & out the the right side of the law~ ~ ~the ending was completely ridiculous ~~ ~~then C.J. changed,,the best character,,best friend,,best character with history,,,,,,the "Falconer",,,,set him up with a wife,,,,maybe
a child,,,,,,who was the C.J.Box that wrote those great books I couldn't put down,,,,,the ones with the "The Highway man," ,, "The Lizard King". ~~~ give us some more "Corey's and more Real Mountain lions,,,bears ,,,Bars,,bad guys and Horses!!
Joe needs to ride ! I want to ride with him ~~~jcn

Excellent---My Favorite in the Joe Pickett Series

I've read or listened to all the Joe Pickett books and I have mixed feelings about the series. I like the setting and the descriptions, but sometimes the stories can be a little tame, and I do find Joe to be a real wimp. Take some shooting lessons already! Stop groveling to Mary Beth! However, Wolf Pack was great from start to finish. There was plenty of action and the pace never lagged. There was an interesting female game warden. The bad guys were truly despicable. I do recommend listening to the book on 1.25 speed, as the narrator can be a little slow. Here's hoping this is the start of a new direction for the series.

Box is The Best

I don’t know how he does it, each Joe Pickett is better than the last. Sad I’ll have to wait another year for the next one. I usually “hoard” them until closer to the next release, but just needed something to sink my audio teeth into(pun intended). Thank you, CJ Box for never disappointing!
