Story
When a viral apocalypse kills 97 percent of the people on the planet, the survivors' humanity is hanging by a thread. Amid the leftovers of civilization, ex-Army Ranger Jason Larsen is reminded of the meaning of hope, family, and loyalty by a dog and a young boy who are as alone as he is. The survivors he seems to collect become family, and that is very bad news for those who think they run the apocalypse.

Story
A mutating plague is spreading. It's killing two of every three people on Earth. And Mike Crenshaw is totally unprepared. From the world of The Traveler Series comes a new cast of characters, new obstacles, and the same devastating, world-altering virus which plunges society into the depth of a dystopian hell. Unprepared begins in the hours before The Scourge takes hold. As if ripped from today's headlines, governments react too slowly and the disease spreads too fast. Quarantines don't work. Infrastructure fails. People die.

Story
Cassie Forrest isn't surprised to learn that the day she’s decided to get her life together is also the day the world ends. After all, she’s been on a self-imposed losing streak since her survivalist parents died: she’s stopped painting, broken off her engagement to Adrian and dated a real jerk. Rectifying her mistakes has to wait, however, because Cassie and her friends have just enough time to escape Brooklyn for her parents’ cabin before Bornavirus LX turns them into zombies, too.

Story
Cassie Forrest could almost believe life at Kingdom Come Farm is perfect, with Adrian and her friends at her side and spring on the way. The spring thaw also means millions of defrosting zombies, however, and if the past year has taught her anything, it's that life in this new world is highly imperfect. When Safe Zones throughout the country begin to disappear and the zombies at the fences grow in number, Cassie clings to the hope that if she has the people she loves most, it will be all right.

Sunset Park is gone. People are missing. Sylvie, Eric, and the other survivors have crossed the water to the security of a new Safe Zone, where they hope to heal their battered hearts, amass an armory, and get back at the ones who took it all away. But with zombies on the move and few resources to speak of, it’s harder than expected to plot their revenge. For some, it’s harder still to garner their resolve, since vengeance means more of them will die. But safety is ephemeral in a city where food is short and tensions are high. It seems fate may leave them no choice but to fight.

Months into the apocalypse, the zombies show no signs of dying, but it's clear everyone in Sunset Park will die without enough food to outlast the undead. Add in the less-than-sociable new neighbors only blocks away, and the hunt for sustenance has come to feel more like a race than a ramble. Sylvie is happy in her new home with the people who've become like family, though she's still working out how to let them into her heart. Eric wants in, and he wants to find his sister, but he can't do both at the same time.

It was just a random mutation - one of a billion that happen in viruses every day. But this one was different. It exploded out of Somalia and spread across the oceans before anybody thought to look up from their cell phones to see what was going on. The infected breathed the virus into the air around them, spreading it through the cities faster than anyone thought possible. Hospitals were overwhelmed. Police lines crumbled. Quarantine sites disintegrated. Cities started to collapse.

Publisher's Summary
In the zombie apocalypse, your worst enemy may be yourself.
Rose Winter has enough problems. With a marriage going down the tubes and a dreaded anniversary party on the horizon, the last thing she needs is the zombie apocalypse. She wanted to get drunk and sing karaoke, not murder her undead neighbors. It’s clear the party’s over, however, now Rose has more problems - a missing husband, an overbearing houseguest, and keeping her family alive.
Tom Jensen has inflexible rules. Rule number one? Don’t deviate from the plan. But when his life is overturned in the space of minutes, his plans die along with everything else. The world is finished, the future is uncertain, and survival means living in the last place he’d planned to be. Maybe his rules weren’t meant to be broken, but if he can’t change his tune, he risks losing the one thing he has left - his daughter.
Craig Matthews has a mission: get to Oregon. Doable, maybe, if he could bring himself to leave his apartment. With his food and water near gone and death closer than ever, a chance encounter may lead to finding his friends - if he can first find his courage.
Unfortunately, the new world doesn’t always mean leaving old problems behind, and as the West Coast succumbs to the virus, the survivors face more than the undead - they face themselves. But in an existence where fences offer dubious safety and zombies certain danger, people may save you in more ways than one.

It was okay.
I have read all of Fleming's books set in this world. I've enjoyed the previous two series. That being said, this book was . . . just okay.
First, what bothered me throughout the book was the seeming need to overexplain things dealing with gender identity, etc. She did an information dump in one section. As we marched on through the characters, I felt like the author had a checklist to cover every single known group, and I began checking it off in my head when I realized what was happening. It seemed like there was secondary agenda to represent a bunch of underrepresented groups. This a noble endeavor that can be pulled off - when all of the characters aren't dumped into one novel in what feels like a "let's put everyone into these pages and be sure to put in into the story somehow" plan. In this day and age, I don't think many people care one way or another about character gender/orientation, but I found that the way author placed the characters and brought up these topics pulled focus from the novel because it was so obvious. It was ridiculous, and would be laughable if I didn't know she was serious.
Second, the characters were unrelatable to the point of being unrealistic. The constant whining of a few of them made me wish for their demise. Most adults know what negative self-speak is; however, it was poured on too thick. I also found some of the characters to be shells and clichés, rather than actual characters developed for supporting roles.
Third, the main character is . . . bland - not quite the right word, but I can't put my finger on it. She is also annoying in an unlikable way. I don't think she is very well-written and, despite her situation, I didn't feel very sympathetic. She was also a character on the author's checklist.
Fourth, the book was very, very predictable. I don't know if it's because I am familiar with the author's writing or not, but the plot and path were apparent very early on in the story.
Finally, the narrators. Part of the character issues may be the way they were read. Still, whether you like/dislike a narrator, or a book, is subjective.
Overall, I found this book disappointing (especially when measured next to the first books of the other series) because I expect more from this author. As a standalone, it is also just okay. I will still buy the other books because I think (hope) they'll get better.

✫✫ 4.5 Stars ✫✫
I knew when I started this that was I going to be sad when it was over and I have to wait for the next book but I love the world this author has created and there was no way I could wait. This series feels very different for me from the other two. I was very surprised with how little excitement & death this book had and that makes me think the next book is going to be a blood bath lol. I liked getting to know the characters and definitely had a few that it took me while to like but I came around for most of them (there are a few I won't be sad when they are gone LOL). I liked that no one in this series is perfect, no one is a hero from the beginning and they all had/have a lot of growing to do to survive this new world. Now I will whine for a year until this next book comes out ;)
The narration was good, no one stood out more than the others for me, they all came together well.

Didn't like this one
The book started off good but then turned into a drama about marriage. Then the Craig chapters started. The most boring narrator and character I have encountered. If you are interested in zombie light with a heavy dose of boredom you will love this book. Me? Not so much.

Might be my favorite book in all the series
This may just be my favorite book in all her series. I was worried that it would be too much like the others and bore me but it was great. I stayed up way too late listening and finished the whole thing in 2 days. Now I want the next one. It reminds me of the first season of the walking dead and not just because of the zombies. I don’t mean the plot line is the same though. It is just the feeling of family. The people you loved before the apocalypse and the new people who become family.
Sarah does a great job making her characters real. None are perfect most have a weird quirk or two. She allows us to laugh one minute and the next chapter worry about our favorite character. I would recommend this book to zombie lovers or someone who likes a good story about how loving complicated and hurtful family can be.
All 4 of the narrators were great and I would love listening to them again. I am going to try and figure out which one was Rose’s because she may be my favorite (also one of my favorite characters so that may make me bias). Having the different narrators also helped with keeping people straight.
If you liked this one and have not read the other two series set in this world I highly recommended you pick them up while waiting for the next one of these.

Author forgot to include an ending
I get that it’s the first book in a series but when did it become ok to just stop the story on a random chapter?!? The story itself is good but after listening for 15+ hours, you would think the author would give readers something to make the time worthwhile. This was a TERRIBLE way to “end” a book. Not sure I’d bother with book 2 — the action scene probably won’t come for a few more $$’s — err, I mean books. Might as well hold off and just buy the final book in the series to actually get a beginning, middle AND end in one book.

5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I wondered when I saw this book was available, was it going to be as good as the first two series, how much can you write about zombies and not be repetitious. Well it was different, can’t say better, but new perspective, new characters, if I’m not mistaken where it all began. This the first book in the series was rather mild not a lot of action, more getting to know characters, a rather harrowing journey but no major battles, but I’m sure they are in store, have to wait looking forward for next in the series.
Awesome narration by Roger, Teri, Christian & Mia.

THIS IS MY FAVORITE ONE!
I've read all 3 of these series. Each of them stuck with me and I couldn't get enough. This author has a way with character development that cause a love to form for them. This latest book blows them away, once again so impressed! These books are added to my favorite series. Along with the Outlander series, Discovery of witches and now all of these. ♡
