Publisher's Summary

“Brilliantly researched, utterly gripping history: the first full account of a remarkable group of Jewish refugees - a top-secret band of brothers - who waged war on Hitler.” (Alex Kershaw, New York Times best-selling author of The Longest Winter and TheLiberator)

The incredible World War II saga of the German-Jewish commandos who fought in Britain’s most secretive special-forces unit - but whose story has gone untold until now

June 1942. The shadow of the Third Reich has fallen across the European continent. In desperation, Winston Churchill and his chief of staff form an unusual plan: a new commando unit made up of Jewish refugees who have escaped to Britain. The resulting volunteers are a motley group of intellectuals, artists, and athletes, most from Germany and Austria. Many have been interned as enemy aliens, and have lost their families, their homes - their whole worlds. They will stop at nothing to defeat the Nazis. Trained in counterintelligence and advanced combat, this top secret unit becomes known as X Troop. Some simply call them a suicide squad.

Drawing on extensive original research, including interviews with the last surviving members, Leah Garrett follows this unique band of brothers from Germany to England and back again, with stops at British internment camps, the beaches of Normandy, the battlefields of Italy and Holland, and the hellscape of Terezin concentration camp - the scene of one of the most dramatic, untold rescues of the war. For the first time, X Troop tells the astonishing story of these secret shock troops and their devastating blows against the Nazis.

“Garrett’s detective work is stunning, and her storytelling is masterful. This is an original account of Jewish rescue, resistance, and revenge.” (Wendy Lower, author of The Ravine and National Book Award finalist Hitler’s Furies)

Necessary knowledge

Kyrie should listen to this….
Seriously anyone interested in knowing truth should read or listen. The narrator is subtle in telling an important contribution to the War. Thanks to the author. Carry On…

Proud to be fighting for Britain!

As you may know from previous reviews, these stories(of courage behind enemy lines), are my passion. This is one of the best I have come across lately. High praise for author Leah Garrett! Well researched and well written. I have listened twice already, and will listen again! Found the perfect narrator for this story. John Lee, for me is beyond five stars! Listening, it's like your best friend telling you this story. You know I am a musician(drummer & singer), and voice is everything for me in an audio book. John Lee equals excellence! This story of German and Austrian Jews being persecuted in their own villages; losing family members; not knowing about the disappearance of others is a very compelling listen right from the word go. It follows their trouble getting out of Hitler's Reich and how they were treated when finally they made it to England. They are selected, but don't really know why or what they have been marked for. They train intensively and are sent on 'one way' missions for the most part. They are proud young men who are driven to hit back at this madman who has destroyed their homeland. It follows their Ops, and needless to say of the original number selected, not even half would return. I would like to say that I think Audible(AMAZON), would be doing themselves a favour and selling MORE Audiobooks by letting us on audible.ca have access to audible .com REVIEWS! (I have suggested this on several phone calls, however it remains the same.) Just trying to help everyone who are passionate about their listening as I am. If you love this genre, as I, I can't recommend this book enough. Don't miss it. - R. Larocque.

I never write reviews, but this is a must!

This is possibly the most important and enthralling audiobook I’ve ever listened to! For anyone with even a passing interest in the 2nd World War, you don’t want to miss this exploration of the largely overlooked impact of these brave Jewish German soldiers who fought so valiantly. Both during, and after the war.
