Publisher's Summary

Award-winning singer and actress Clare Bowditch confronts her inner critic in this no-holds-barred memoir.

This is the story I promised myself, aged 21, that I would one day be brave enough - and well enough - to write.

Clare Bowditch has always had a knack for telling stories. Through her music and performing, this beloved Australian artist has touched hundreds of thousands of lives. But what of the stories she used to tell herself? That 'real life' begins only once you're thin or beautiful, that good things happen only to other people.

Your Own Kind of Girl reveals a childhood punctuated by grief, anxiety and compulsion and tells how these forces shaped Clare's life for better and for worse. This is a heartbreaking, wise and at times playful memoir. Clare's own story told raw and as it happened. A reminder that even on the darkest of nights, victory is closer than it seems.

With startling candour, Clare lays bare her truth in the hope that doing so will inspire anyone who's ever done battle with their inner critic. This is the work of a woman who has found her true power - and wants to pass it on.

Happiness, we discover, is possible only when we take charge of the stories we tell ourselves.

What the critics say

"The words that kept coming to me over and over again as I read this book were authenticity and decency. Clare Bowditch made me feel how wonderful and difficult and amazing it is to be a human." (Leigh Sales)

"Brutal at times but funny as f**k. This book will change a lot of lives for the better." (Bernard Fanning)

"Reading this book felt as intimate as having a long, heart-breakingly vulnerable yet hilarious conversation with Clare by a fire with wine in hand. It is a celebration of the human struggle, how we can learn to befriend (and say "f**k off" to) our demons, and ultimately write our own story. There is so much hope in this book." (Missy Higgins)

Story of Mental Health

I am not from Australia, so I had never heard of the author. But her story of her struggle for mental health touched my heart and informed me of some methods to try.

Boohoo

Maybe I would have felt differently reading this at a different time in history, but with the problems that America and the world are facing right now the author's reasons for having panic attacks and depression just seem pathetic, sorry. She obviously led a very privileged life and when things got a little tough she had a complete meltdown. There are sooo many people that have it so much worse, maybe she should have thought of that perspective. Could not finish.

Beautiful 🌹 and Important 💖

I laughed and I cried and was moved by how much I could relate to this story. Mental illness is its own kind of pandemic but no one wants to talk about it. Thank you Claire Bowditch for your courage and honesty. I'm sure many will be helped by your book. Please keep making music... I love your voice, and unique singing style and songs. Olya

I absolutely adore this woman

I listened to the preview and she made me laugh out loud and tugged at my heart strings all in five minutes. I felt like I could relate to her story and found her authenticity and humor refreshing. One of the best memoirs I’ve ever read. I will absolute read it again and again.

great audiobook narrated by the author

4.5 stars I had no idea who Clare Bowditch was or what her story was about, but this was recommended for me on Audible and I decided to try it on a whim. I ended up really enjoying it! She narrates her own story and I thought she did an excellent job! In many ways, considering how dark it got for her at times, it is amazing she's able to tell her story in such a matter-of-fact way at times, and yet, if you listen closely, you can totally hear the emotion of her baring her truths. Although I have not struggled specifically with many of the challenges she has faced, it helped me to better understand eating disorders, mental illness, depression, and living in a place of fear. It made me contemplate my own life and consider some similar challenges I AM facing and that ignoring it is not going to make them go away or get them to be resolved. And for that I am grateful. As much as this story is about her struggles, it is also a story of finding herself and loving herself and even more so, allowing others to love her. I'm going to have to check out some of her music and see what it's like! This audio only gave me a glimse and some of the words were quite powerful. In the end, I'm really glad I gave this story a chance!
