 【解説】「屋根裏の散歩者」は密室殺人事件の傑作で、発表当時、世間から非難を浴びたという問題作。卒業後も親の仕送りで下宿で暮らす郷田三郎は、屋根裏の散歩で20人もの下宿人の意外な姿を盗み見ることがこの上ない快楽となった。ある日、虫の好かない遠藤が口をあけて寝ている姿を見て、ある「犯罪(殺意)」に夢想して興奮し、実行に移すのだが・・・。名探偵、明智小五郎とのスリルあるやりとりが物語を終焉へと誘っていく。
「人間椅子」は、椅子職人の異常な告白の物語。ある日、洋館に住む美しい閨秀作家の佳子のもとに届いた手紙に綴られた告白では、自分が外人ホテルからの特別注文で作った肘掛椅子を愛するあまり、その中に自分の体を忍び込ませたという。皮一枚隔てて触れる様々な外国人の男女の肉体の感触に陶酔するが、やがて彼の欲求は日本人のそれへと沸き立っていく。そしてその椅子は、ある洋館に引き取られていったのだが・・・。
