Publisher's Summary

Audie Award Finalist, Solo Narration - Female, 2014

Is it possible to write a sidesplitting novel about the breakup of the perfect marriage? If the writer is Nora Ephron, the answer is a resounding yes. For in this inspired confection of adultery, revenge, group therapy, and pot roast, the creator of Sleepless in Seattle reminds us that comedy depends on anguish as surely as a proper gravy depends on flour and butter.

Seven months into her pregnancy, Rachel Samstat discovers that her husband, Mark, is in love with another woman. The fact that the other woman has "a neck as long as an arm and a nose as long as a thumb and you should see her legs" is no consolation. Food sometimes is, though, since Rachel writes cookbooks for a living. And in between trying to win Mark back and loudly wishing him dead, Ephron's irrepressible heroine offers some of her favorite recipes. Heartburn is a sinfully delicious novel, as soul-satisfying as mashed potatoes and as airy as a perfect soufflé.

What the critics say

"Great fun. . . . Though Heartburn bristles ferociously with wit, it's not lacking in soul." ( The New York Times Book Review)
"Nora Ephron's first novel is warm, witty and wise." ( Harper's Bazaar)

BORING

Totally out of date. A whiney story about a privileged person's divorce. Years ago it was funny, but not now. Very dated. Meryl Streep could not save it for me. The only reason I bought it.

Very funny

I returned to this book a couple of times because it was just too airy for me to sink teeth into. However, finally feeling like a gossipy conversation, this book hit the mark. The subject matter has depth but the delivery is predominantly light and hilarious. Many killer lines! I recommend it for light reading. Meryl Streep nails it and it’s obvious she enjoys the story.

I really needed this book

this is not an objective review. This book made me fall in love with Nora Ephron. I always really liked her work before this. But I needed to connect with a book or a voice and this did it for me. This book gave me what I needed and I was very happy for reading it.

Heartburn

Excellent book, but the narration provided by Meryl Streep really brought it to life. So heartbreaking and funny at the same time.

Heartburn is as touching, funny and heartwarming as her films. Meryl Streep nails it, as expected.

Wow. Just like the recipes websites online!

You know how some food bloggers will write out a 1000 word essay on why they like bread pudding because it reminds them of that one thing that one time? And you have to scroll passed all that to get the the recipe? Well that's exactly this but posed as a book.

worst book ever

the movie was fabulous so i decided to listen to the book. you don't even recognize the fact that meryl streep is the narrator. there is no story, none of the events relate to one another and she speaks so quickly that nothing makes sense. i honestly cannot believe that nora ephrom actually wrote it. by far the worst audio book i have ever tried to listen to. don't waste a credit on this one. the movie is great however.
