Most people associate storms and other big weather with death - with the kind of force that makes each of us wonder about life, time, and the nature of our surroundings. Some people go out looking for bad weather or go to places where they're likely to encounter it. Others have the misfortune of being at the wrong place at the wrong time. Still, the stories in Storm have more to say than that.

Carl Edward Sagan (November 9, 1934-December 20, 1996), born in Brooklyn, NY, was an American astronomer and astrophysicist. His best-known scientific contribution was his research on the possibility of extraterrestrial life, including experimental demonstration of the production of amino acids from basic chemicals by exposure to light. The following is a lecture Sagan gave in 1977 during which he discussed the place, scale and geometry of earth–the third planet from the Sun, formed 4.5 billion years ago–in our solar system.

Apollo 11 was the first spaceflight to land humans on the Moon, conducted by NASA from July 16 to 24, 1969. Commander Neil Armstrong and Lunar Module Pilot Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin landed the Lunar Module Eagle on July 20th at 20:17 UTC. Armstrong became the first person to step onto the surface about six hours later, at 02:56 UTC on July 21st. Aldrin joined him 19 minutes afterward, and together they spent about two and a half hours exploring the site they had named Tranquility Base upon landing. They collected 47 pounds of lunar material to bring back to Earth before re-entering the Lunar Module.

James Dewey Watson (April 6, 1928-November 6, 2025) was an American molecular biologist, geneticist, and zoologist. Francis Harry Compton Crick (June 8, 1916-July 28, 2004) was an English molecular biologist, biophysicist, and neuroscientist. In 1953, Watson and Crick co-authored an academic paper in Nature proposing the double helix structure of the DNA molecule, building on research by Rosalind Franklin and Raymond Gosling. Edwin Powell Hubble (November 20, 1889 - September 28, 1953), born in Marshfield, MO, was an American astronomer who played a crucial role in establishing the fields of extragalactic astronomy and observational cosmology. Hubble proved that many objects previously thought to be clouds of dust and gas and classified as "nebulae" were actually galaxies beyond the Milky Way. Hubble's name is most widely recognized for the Hubble Space Telescope, which was named in his honor. The following is a 1945 recording of Hubble's lecture at the New York Philharmonic.

On May 6, 1937, the LZ 129 Hindenburg, a German commercial passenger-carrying rigid airship and lead ship of the Hindenburg class, the longest class of flying machine and the largest airship by envelope volume, caught fire and was destroyed during its attempt to dock with its mooring mast at Naval Air Station Lakehurst (NJ). The accident caused 35 fatalities from the 97 people on board (36 passengers and 61 crewmen), and an additional fatality on the ground. Hear Robert Buchanan, youngest member of the airfield ground crew, offer his recollection of the disaster as if unfolded around him.

RMS Titanic was a British passenger liner, operated by the White Star Line, that sank in the North Atlantic Ocean on April 15, 1912, after striking an iceberg during her maiden voyage from Southampton, England, to New York City. Of the estimated 2,224 passengers and crew aboard, more than 1,500 died, making it the deadliest sinking of a single ship up to that time. It remains the deadliest peacetime sinking of an ocean liner or cruise ship. Frank Prentice, an assistant purser on the Titanic, offers his account of how he survived the sinking of the ship.

On October 29, 1991, the 70-foot longliner Andrea Gail, on day 40 of an extended commercial swordfishing trip, was lost in a convergence of three powerful storms off Canada’s Grand Banks. Data buoys measured waves as high as 100 feet, and the boat was hit with winds measuring 80 knots (92 miles per hour). The Andrea Gail’s emergency beacon washed ashore that November on Sable Island, off the coast of Nova Scotia, but the boat and 6-man crew were never found. The crew left behind five children among them, and the entire small town mourned the loss.

Sir Alexander Fleming (August 6, 1881 - March 11, 1955) was a Scottish biologist, pharmacologist and botanist. He wrote many articles on bacteriology, immunology, and chemotherapy. His best-known discoveries are the enzyme substance lysozyme in 1923, and the anitbiotic substance penicillin from the mould Penicillium notatum in 1928, for which he shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1945 with Howard Florey and Ernst Boris Chain.
