On June 26, 1976, Muhammad Ali fought in a mixed-rules contest against iconic pro wrestling champion Antonio Inoki for the so-called "martial arts championship of the world." Broadcast from Tokyo to a potential audience of 1.4 billion in 34 countries, the spectacle foreshadowed and, in many ways, led to the rise of mixed martial arts as a major sport.

A physical and philosophical mediation on why we are drawn to fight each other for sport, what happens to our bodies and brains when we do, and what it all means.

This lecture introduces Judo, a discipline that evolved from Jujutsu—an ancient Japanese martial art involving unarmed combat techniques like throws, strikes, and joint locks, as well as defense against weapons. While Jujutsu dates back to mythological times, formal instruction began around 350 years ago. I studied it under three masters and, in 1882, founded the Kodokan to teach a refined version called Judo.

He exposes the extreme physiological dangers both boxers are subject to under this flawed system.

He was bombastic and cocky in a way that captured the imagination of America but also drew its detractors. He was a bold young African American in an era when few people were as outspoken. He renounced his name - Cassius Clay - as being his 'slave name' and joined the Nation of Islam, renaming himself Muhammad Ali. And finally, in 1966, after being drafted, he refused to join the military for religious and conscientious reasons.
