Romans is the first of the epistles to be penned by the Apostle Paul. As its name suggests, it was written directly to the newly founded Christian church in Rome, which was struggling to uphold the beliefs and morals of Christianity. In this book, Paul clearly lays out the doctrine of Christianity and gives illuminating instructions on how to live righteously in the midst of sin.

The Third Book of the Maccabees is recognized as Deuterocanonical Scripture by the Greek and Russian Orthodox Churches. It tells the story of persecution of the Jews under Pharaoh Ptolemy IV Philopater (222–205 BC) whose plans to annihilate the Jews in Egypt are thwarted by God. This was some decades before the Maccabee uprising in Judea, as chronicled in 1 and 2 Maccabees.

It’s not often that you come across a document of such religious and historical importance as The Septuagint Genesis – in fact its significance would be hard to overstate. But what is the Septuagint? Well, its name refers to the “seventy’ (actually 72) translators – six from each tribe of Israel – who translated the Hebrew Scriptures into Greek, the primary language of Jews in Egypt at the time. This, the oldest and arguably most important translation, was the version of The Bible that Jesus himself would have read – and the one from which almost all the New Testament’s writers were quoting.
