Many of us recognize the declining influence of the church today. And while we may be interested in doing something to reverse the trend, few of us realize we are part of the problem - especially when we engage the culture in ways that prevent the joy of God from being seen. Greg Forster comes to our aid by first laying out the historical factors that have contributed to the church’s loss of influence in our society today. He then explores the significance of foundational practices such as preaching, worship, and discipleship.

In 1792, William Carey had noticed that his contemporaries no longer sought to share the gospel with the same zeal as the new believers of the early church. In The Enquiry, he counters this apathy with a theological justification for missions, a history of missionary activity and a survey of the world. He then turns to persuasion, arguing against common objections to sending missionaries and convincing his readers that a missionary society should be formed.

Edom was at odds with Israel ever since its forefather, Esau, had struggled in the womb with his twin brother, Jacob, the patriarch of Israel. Instead of following God’s call, Jonah rebels and sails in the opposite direction, deliberately fleeing from God. Stubborn Jonah ends up in the belly of a fish. Listen to the story of this prophet as God disciplines him for his disobedience and teaches him that he loves all people, even the enemies of his chosen ones.

God’s providence always comes through, even in the worst of situations. This is something we learn in the life of Queen Esther. A woman of strength and humility, Queen Esther endures the struggles that come with living a life of obedience to God. She knows that God’s hand is on her and that his plans are not moved, not even by the actions of evil men.

The prophet Micah scolds Israel and Judah for their idolatry and injustice to the poor. The Assyrians are about to invade, and the two Jewish nations will have to suffer for their sinfulness. Thankfully God's judgment is seasoned with mercy, and he will not break the covenant with his people. Watch as God comes through to preserve "the remnant of Israel" (Micah 2:12) despite their faithlessness.

As Christians we often face opposition while doing kingdom work. It is sometimes easy for us to forget about God's sovereignty and become discouraged. The prophet Haggai challenges God's people to trust in God's power as they face local opposition while building the Temple. He encourages them to repent and look to God for strength. Listen to Haggai as he draws attention to common struggles we face today.
