The last days of the Civil War. Notes from the author: The following is a short story I wrote in the Elantris world back in January of 2006. There were always a few holes in Elantris where I decided not to include viewpoints or sections of explanation in the name of streamlining, particularly at the end. In the back of my mind, I knew what happened. This story talks about one of those holes; it is meant to be heard after you’ve finished the novel and takes place during the events of the climax.

The Kurtherians which rule the Leath have made a fatal mistake. Their prime intelligence officer finds what they have done in his past. Other people have made moves against the Queen Bitch's people, and she sends Baba Yaga after them. Bethany Anne goes Ahead Full on taking out enemies of the Empire, while Ranger Tabitha helps uncover a Skaine effort and brings the Bitch's themselves to help clean up the mess.

The vampire hunter known only as D has been hired by a wealthy, dying man to find his daughter, who was kidnapped by the powerful vampire Lord Mayerling. Though humans speak well of Mayerling, the price on his head is too high for D to ignore and he sets out to save her before she can be turned into an undead creature of the night.
