Marshall McLuhan (1911-1980) was a Canadian professor, philosopher, and best-selling author. He made major contributions to the study of media theory. McLuhan is well-known for his expression "the medium is the message", from his 1964 book, Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man. William Guy Carr (June 2, 1895 to October 2, 1959), born in Lancashire, England, and educated in Scotland, was an English-born Canadian naval officer, author and conspiracy theorist. He served during World War I as an English submarine officer and, in World War II, as a naval officer for Canada. Though he first came to notice with books about his military experiences as a submariner, Carr later turned to writing about the American Illuminati, which he alleged to have uncovered. J. R. R. Tolkien was an English writer, poet, philologist, and university professor best known as the author of fantasy works like "The Hobbit" and "Lord of the Rings."
