Two Tales From Nathaniel Hawthorne includes "The British Matron," a satirical essay, and the short story "The Hollow of the Three Trees. Hawthorne (1804–1864) was born in Salem, Massachusetts. His ancestors include John Hathorne, the only judge involved in the Salem witch trials who never repented of his actions. Nathaniel later added a "w" to make his name "Hawthorne" in order to hide this relation. The Scarlet Letter, his most famous novel, was published in 1850, followed by a succession of other novels, including The House of the Seven Gables.

"Dream Life and Real Life" is a haunting short story about a little orphan girl in servitude to a cruel Boer family. One night, following a beating, she runs away and hides in a cave. But there she overhears three men plotting to rob and burn down the Boer's farm and kill the family. What should she do? Warn them, or let them burn to death?

Frederick Cornell (May 6, 1867 - March 6, 1921) was an English soldier, geologist, prospector and author born in Devon, England, and educated at the Bedford School. In 1902, he moved to South Africa and served at Lieutenant with the South African Native Labour Corps during World War I. His short stories, considered to be among South Africa's finest, include this tale from his surreal experiences living among the bushmen.

"The Garden Lodge" is a short story by Willa Cather, first published in 1905. It tells the story of a woman asked by her husband if she would agree to tear down their garden lodge and build a new summer house there instead. She grows nostalgic as she remembers spending fond times there with tenor Raymond d'Esquerre when he was visiting. Although a moderate and no-nonsense woman, the singer rekindled her passion for music during his stay.

William Fryer Harvey (April 14, 1885 - June 4, 1937), known as W. F. Harvey, was an English writer of short stories, most notably in the macabre and horror genres.

"In Consequences I," Kesselheim recalls how when things sometimes go wrong, the key players have to make immediate decisions. In 1979, Kesselheim and companions were involved in a canoe that had capsized in the frigid lake waters of northern Quebec and he was thrust into the role of rescuer. In "Consequences II," the story is told from the perspective of one of the capsized paddlers.

"In The Storm" is LeMoyne's personal account of the aftermath of Hurricane Andrew in south Florida. The writer, with his wife, daughter, and sister-in-law, evacuated their apartment near downtown Miami and drove to a friend's concrete-block house about five miles inland. The worst of the storm struck just 10 miles farther south. In the end, Hurricane Andrew severely damaged 300 square miles, with about 100 square miles blasted or simply gone.

Geoffrey Childs, born in 1946, sketches this fictional scene: When a pair of climbers does not return, two sets of rescuers set out—one for experience, and the other one to save friends. In the aftermath of the event, the motives and feelings are just as divided.

On October 29, 1991, the 70-foot longliner Andrea Gail, on day 40 of an extended commercial swordfishing trip, was lost in a convergence of three powerful storms off Canada’s Grand Banks. Data buoys measured waves as high as 100 feet, and the boat was hit with winds measuring 80 knots (92 miles per hour). The Andrea Gail’s emergency beacon washed ashore that November on Sable Island, off the coast of Nova Scotia, but the boat and 6-man crew were never found. The crew left behind five children among them, and the entire small town mourned the loss.
