"The Adventures of Paddy Beaver" is another in the long list of children’s books by the conservationist, Thornton W. Burgess. In this book, the industrious and clever Paddy Beaver, a newcomer to the Green Forest, has encounters with Sammy Jay, Jerry Muskrat, Ol’ Man Coyote and other inhabitants of the Green Forest. Along the way, we learn how Paddy builds his dam and his house, and how he stores his food.

Sammy Jay is told by the little people of the Green Forest that he is keeping them awake at night with his calling out "Thief, Thief". But Sammy isn’t calling out at night, he’s been sleeping. At least, he thinks he has. Sticky-Toes the tree toad is hearing his own voice when his mouth is shut, and he is angry and puzzled. And Unc’ Billy Possum thinks he may just have seen a friend from Ol’ Virginny who might possibly solve the mystery.

Even in the peaceful, sun-splashed world of the Green Forest, the Laughing Brook, and the Smiling Pool, trouble sometimes makes an appearance and disturbs the lives of the animals living there. And so it is in this charming story about Jerry Muskrat and his friends Little Joe Otter, Spotty the Turtle, Grandfather Frog, and Billy Mink. First, Farmer Brown's boy has set nasty traps all around the Smiling Pool and that spells trouble for Jerry and the other creatures who live in and around the Pool. Wise old Grandfather Frog must think long and hard to come up with a solution for that problem.

When Jimmy Skunk curls up to take a nap in an old barrel, the imp of mischief gets the better of Peter Rabbit. Tons of trouble plague the long-eared prankster after he decides it'd be great fun to see the barrel — with Jimmy inside — roll down from its resting point high on a hill. Reddy Fox gets the blame for Jimmy's wild ride (as well as a dose of the skunk's "perfume"); Peter gets his comeuppance for playing nasty tricks; and before the day is out, Jimmy Skunk and Unc' Billy Possum go egg-hunting and wind up in a pretty pickle in Farmer Brown's henhouse.

One day Peter Rabbit sees a strange thing that scares him. He tells many of his friends in the Green Forest who at first don't believe him. Then, after Unc' Billy Possum sees the same thing, others begin to wonder what this strange thing is. Peter eventually learns the truth of what scared him and together with his friends, they start scaring Green Forest predators such as Reddy Fox, Granny Fox, and Ole Man Coyote. But, what is it that is scaring them up on Prickly Porky's hill?

In The Adventures of 'Unc Billy Possum, 'Unc Billy is a new arrival in the Green Forest. He finds he is lonesome in his new home. His almost uncontrollable urge for fresh eggs gets him in trouble with Farmer Brown's boy, and he soon discovers that he has good friends in the Green Forest.

Little Joe Otter is playful and full of surprises. Peter Rabbit is curious. Peter is curious why he has not seen Little Joe Otter in the Smiling Pool? Wait! Did Peter just see two Little Joe Otters in the Smiling Pool? He decides to leave the Old Briar Patch and see the Great World, starting at the Old Pasture. After a close encounter with an old nemesis, Hooty the Owl, Peter discovers that he is still lonely. He runs into Old Jed Thumper who wants nothing more than to chase Peter away. Peter also discovers that Old Jed Thumper has a charming young daughter, Little Miss Fuzzy Tail, who Peter falls for. One day he discovers that Hooty the Owl and Mrs. Hooty have laid eggs in a nest when there is still snow on the ground. Blacky devises a plan with his fellow crows to steal them. Later, we find out that Blacky has a good side too. As with all Thornton W. Burgess books, there are positive messages for young listeners.
