Santo Nino de Atocha: He kept them out of harm's way as they traveled the dangerous roads. He saved them from snake bites, dehydration, starvation, and always brought them back to Mother Church. There is a tremendous devotion to the Santo Niño de Atocha to this day in many Hispanic countries.

When we talk of saints who have been maligned, misunderstood, and mistreated, no one deserves more a place in this book than venerable Pope Pius XII. We have learned late in life that the history passed down depends on the authors, not necessarily on the facts. We can remember in our lifetime, the escalator of our emotions and intellect, as a country ascended from enemy to friend and then descended, back again, from friend to enemy.

St. Paschal Baylon is one of the most multi-faceted diamonds the Church has ever contained in its treasury of faith. He is a lay person, never having been ordained a priest. Yet, he is the patron of Eucharistic congresses and Confraternities of the Blessed Sacrament. His whole life centered around the Eucharist, for which he is most known, yet he would not become a priest. He felt only called to be a brother.

Whenever we are under attack from the slimy one, it is difficult to remember that God is in charge and that he is allowing this to strengthen us for even greater battles. The honeymoon over, God stood by and permitted Satan to tempt our little Catherine. But Sister Catherine was not so little that she could not tell the devil off when he tried to tempt her.

The fifth century brings us not one, but two future saints. It is AD 480, and a little voice cries out, "Here I am, world!" But no sooner heard, than another tiny cry fills the air. Not one, but two babies will be born to the parents of the future Saint Benedict and his twin sister Saint Scholastica. Now, Norcia is not easy to get to, as we well know.

Blessed Angela of Foligno is a great mystic of the Middle Ages. We travel to Foligno, Italy, near Assisi, for the life of this great Franciscan mystic and contemplative.

We go to Careggi, Italy, where the incorrupt body of Saint Mary Magdalene de Pazzi is. We visit the Carmelite convent where she lived, the bell tower where she rang the bells while in ecstasy, the chapel and the garden where she had ecstasies and visions from souls in Purgatory.

Seldom in history do we find a shrine and a village that owes its existence to one man and his dream. The miracle that occurred in AD 700 was just the beginning. That was 1250 years ago. Had that miracle taken place and then the flesh and blood disintegrated, as would have been normal, the miracle would have been nonetheless a miracle. The priest's faith had been renewed. The entire town - the whole country, for that matter - became aware of the miracle.

Heresies have attacked the Church before, and she is still standing. Jesus made a promise that hell would not prevail against his Church, and he has kept his promise for over 2000 years. That’s all well and true, but how many dead bodies were left behind by the disobedience of a few possibly (or not) well-intentioned dissidents!

Mary’s appearance to five children in Beauraing, Belgium, in November and December of 1932 has always fascinated us. Saint Dominic Savio was born of very poor but holy peasant stock, one of ten children. His parents were from Castelnuovo D’Asti, ten miles outside Turin. When things got desperate they were forced to leave, to find work in a small village outside of Chieri called Riva. There on April 2, 1842, a boy child was born to Charles and Brigid Savio, whom they baptized Dominic. When Dominic was two years old, the family moved once again, to a village near their home town of Castelnuovo d’Asti, Murialdo.

We know Our Dear Lady was upset about how her priests and nuns, as well as the laity were being treated. She had always been so loving to her children. It was she whom Jesus allowed to intercede on our behalf. We drove him beyond reconciliation, and yet, because of her, he allowed his arms to be held back. It did not seem that mankind was going to get any better. It was time for tribulation. But the Mother, the loving Mother, asked again for one more chance to reason with her children, and again, the gift was given by the Son to the Mother.
