In celebration of the 40th anniversary of its original publication, here is a new translation of the classic story of the life and loves of a poet/physician during the turmoil of the Russian Revolution. Taking his family from Moscow to what he hopes will be shelter in the Ural Mountains, Zhivago finds himself instead embroiled in the battle between the Whites and the Reds. Set against this backdrop of cruelty and strife is Zhivago’s love for the tender and beautiful Lara.

À l’orée du XXe siècle en Russie, le jeune orphelin Iouri Jivago se destine à la médecine. Emporté par la marche de l’Histoire, cet homme ordinaire, à l’écoute du monde qui l’entoure, traverse la première moitié du siècle et les événements qui modèlent profondément son pays. Au détour d’un champ de bataille, Jivago retrouvera Lara. Tous deux mariés et habités par la question du bien, ils ne pourront résister à la passion qui les rapproche autant qu’elle les sépare, nouant à jamais leurs existences.

Essentially, the story is about Russia before and after the October Revolution of 1917. There are many characters who float into and out of the story, the main one being Yuri Zhivago. As the tale unwinds, we encounter the decadence of pre-war Czarist Russia, the harrowing experience of WWI, and the sudden exhilaration of revolution. But exhilaration gives way to the horror of civil war and Bolshevik terror.

Boris Pasternak schrieb mit seinem Aufsehen erregenden Roman ein kluges Panorama der russischen Revolutionszeit.

"Storia di una controttava" e altri racconti è un libro in prosa poetica, dove la vita, la natura e soprattutto i sentimenti, ricadono sotto la lente di un potente microscopio. L'opera, scritta probabilmente intorno al 1913, si ispira ai ricordi dei viaggi in Germania compiuti dalla famiglia Pasternak negli anni precedenti.
