Il y a peu encore, Eragon n'était qu'un simple garçon de ferme, et Saphira, son dragon, une étrange pierre bleue ramassée dans la forêt... Depuis, le sort de plusieurs peuples repose sur leurs épaules. De longs mois d'entraînement et de combats ont permis des victoires et provoqué des pertes cruelles. Or, l'ultime bataille contre Galbatorix reste à mener. Certes, Eragon et Saphira ont des alliés : les Vardens conduits par Nasuada, Arya et les elfes, le roi Orik et ses nains, Garzhvog et ses redoutables Urgals.

Un peuple en lutte, des exploits héroïques, une épée mythique. La saga se poursuit... Eragon a une double promesse à tenir : aider Roran à délivrer sa fiancée, Katrina, prisonnière des Ra'zacs, et venger la mort de son oncle Garrow. Mais le combat continue contre Galbatorix.

Un dragonnier, un nouveau rebelle, une princesse. L'épopée continue... Eragon et Saphira, sa dragonne, sont à peine sortis vainqueurs de la bataille de Farthen Dûr que des Urgals attaquent de nouveau et tuent le chef des Vardens... Après lui avoir prêté allégeance, Eragon entreprend avec Saphira un long et périlleux voyage vers Ellesméra, le royaume des elfes, où ils recevront les enseignements du fameux Togira Ikonoka, l'Infirme Inchangé.

En Alagaësia, des mois se sont écoulés depuis la chute du tyran Galbatorix.
