German intelligence officer Captain Gregor Reinhardt has just been reassigned to the Feldjaegerkorps - a new branch of the military police with far-reaching powers. His position separates him from the friends and allies he has made in the last two years. And he needs them now more than ever. In war-torn Yugoslavia, a beautiful young filmmaker and photographer - a veritable hero to her people - and a German officer have been brutally murdered. Assigned to the case is military intelligence officer Captain Gregor Reinhardt. Already haunted by his wartime actions and the mistakes he's made off the battlefield, he soon finds that his investigation may be more than just a murder, and that the late Yugoslavian heroine may have been much more brilliant - and treacherous - than anyone knew.

A year after Germany's defeat, Gregor Reinhardt has been hired back onto Berlin's civilian police force. The city is divided among the victorious allied powers, but tensions are growing, and the police are riven by internal rivalries as factions within it jockey for power and influence with Berlin's new masters. When a man is found slain in a broken-down tenement, Reinhardt embarks on a gruesome investigation.

It's the final days of the Great War, and four years of grinding conflict has warped more than one man's mind. When a secret meeting of top brass is called someone sets off a bomb that kills all the attendees. It looks for sure that one of the men in Gregor Reinhardt's company is the culprit. But since that man killed himself, the general is looking for someone else to share the blame. Reinhardt must prove his trooper innocent if he hopes to avoid the fate of a co-conspirator.

The Western Front, July 1918. Gregor Reinhardt is a young lieutenant in a stormtrooper battalion on the Western Front when one of his subordinates is accused of murdering a group of officers and then subsequently trying to take his own life. Not wanting to believe his friend could have done what he is accused of, Reinhardt begins to investigate. He starts to uncover the outline of a conspiracy at the heart of the German army, a conspiracy aimed at ending the war on the terms of those who have a vested interest in a future for Germany that resembles her past. 

Berlin, 1947. L'ex-capitaine Gregor Reinhardt a retrouvé un poste d'inspecteur à la police criminelle de la ville. Dévastée par les combats, éventrée par les bombardements, Berlin est aussi divisée entre des puissances victorieuses qui veulent chacune préserver ou accroître leur influence. Gregor Reinhardt est officier dans l'Abwehr, en poste à Sarajevo en 1943. Avant la guerre, il était policier à la secton criminelle de Berlin, la fameuse "Kripo". C'est un homme consciencieux, un militaire qui a toujours tenu le nazisme à distance. C'est aussi un homme profondément triste depuis qu'il a perdu sa femme et son fils. L'une est morte dans ses bras à l'hôpital et l'autre lui a totalement échappé, tombé sous l'emprise du nouveau régime et parti combattre sur le front de l'Est.

Début 1944, à Sarajevo, le capitaine Gregor Reinhardt est réaffecté dans les Feldjagerkorps, une nouvelle branche de la police militaire aux pouvoirs très étendus. Ce nouveau rôle l'éloigne de son réseau d'alliés et d'amis allemands qui tentent de s'opposer au régime nazi. Alors que l'armée allemande tâche de se retirer de Yougoslavie sans trop de pertes, Reinhardt est contacté par les témoins d'un massacre de civils commis, semble-t-il, par les milices croates oustachis. Mais Reinhardt pressent très vite qu'il y a là bien plus qu'un simple incident de guerre.
