D'où le nom qu'ils lui donnèrent." Londres, 1852. Helen, préceptrice de deux enfants dans une riche famille, répond à une annonce qui propose à des jeunes femmes de partir épouser des Britanniques installés en Nouvelle-Zélande.

Nouvelle-Zélande, 1863. Carol et Linda vivent heureuses après que leurs mères, Cat et Ida, ont surmonté bien des embûches. Mais leur bonheur leur vaut aussi des ennemis, qui envient leur prospérité ou voient d'un mauvais œil leurs liens avec les Maoris.

Nouvelle-Zélande, 1880. Aroha vit heureuse dans l'orphelinat que dirige sa mère Linda à Otaki, sur l'île du Nord. Jusqu'à ce jour de septembre où, à 14 ans, elle réchappe de peu à une catastrophe. Pour l'aider à surmonter le traumatisme et le sentiment de culpabilité qui ne la quitte plus depuis, Linda décide de l'envoyer à Rata Station, la ferme où sa demi-sœur Carol élève des moutons.

Gloria, l'arrière-petite-fille de Gwyneira McKenzie (la jeune Anglaise qui débarquait sur les côtes de la Nouvelle-Zélande dans "Le Pays du Nuage blanc"), a joui d'une enfance et d'une adolescence idylliques à Kiward Station, la ferme familiale. Mais tout s'effondre quand ses parents - pourtant absents car pris par la carrière de cantatrice de sa mère - lui font savoir qu'il est temps pour elle de devenir une véritable lady.

1837. L'espoir d'une vie meilleure pousse les parents d'Ida à quitter l'Europe pour la Nouvelle-Zélande. Quand leur navire accoste enfin au sud de l'île, les colons s'installent dans un village de pêcheurs.

La jeune métis de quinze ans, surnommée la reine maorie, possède un physique et une voix magnifiques qui suscitent l'admiration. Mais, capricieuse et uniquement intéressée par la musique, Kura refuse d'assumer son rôle d'héritière de Kiward Station, le domaine familial. Gwyneira décide alors de l'envoyer en pensionnat pour lui donner une éducation stricte.

Irlande, 1846. A 17 et 19 ans, Kathleen et Michael sont amoureux. Ils ne rêvent que d'une chose : quitter leur île natale pour rejoindre les Amériques, y fonder une famille et commencer une vie nouvelle. Car Kathleen est enceinte... Mais ces projets s'effondrent quand Michael est arrêté pour avoir volé du pain. Il est alors envoyé en Australie pour y purger sa peine. Au cours de la traversée, il fait la connaissance de Lizzie, une jeune prostituée. Pendant ce temps, Ian Coltrane, un vendeur de bétail, demande en mariage Kathleen, inconsolable depuis le départ de son amant.

 As the nineteenth century draws to a close, the struggle for women’s suffrage has finally reached New Zealand. But when the tide of change rolls in, it threatens to engulf two young women from very different backgrounds, who are coming of age amid the tumult.
