It is an important utopian work, was inspired by Plato's Republic, and describes a theocratic society where goods, women, and children are held in common.

The work was written in Italian in 1602, shortly after Campanella's imprisonment for heresy and sedition. A Latin version was written in 1613–1614 and published in Frankfurt in 1623. The book is presented as a dialogue between "a Grandmaster of the Knights Hospitaller and a Genoese Sea-Captain". Inspired by Plato's Republic and the description of Atlantis in Timaeus, it describes a theocratic society where goods, women and children are held in common.

Nell'età della Controriforma, mentre da una parte maturavano le premesse storiche poste dall'Umanesimo e dal Rinascimento e dall'altra si stabilizzava la dominazione congiunta dell'Impero di Spagna e dell'Inquisizione, Campanella si assunse la missione di "debellare tre mali estremi: tirannide, sofismi, ipocrisia". Ispirata dalle utopie politiche di Tommaso Moro e Platone, nella "Città del Sole" Campanella immagina una repubblica "naturale", condotta da un re-sacerdote e da tre magistrati.
