Imagine you were at the American Constitutional Convention of 1787 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. You were among the delegates who shaped the founding document of a new nation. You were also among the few who knew the harsh reality of slavery, the system that provided free labor for many of the wealthy planters and merchants in attendance. You saw the contradiction between the ideals of liberty and equality and the practice of owning human beings as property.

Like many other books, this book is about a journey. But unlike other books, the destination of the journey is the point where the parallel lines meet. The narrator is locked inside the book. The only way he can get out of it is by persuading one of the other characters in the book to finish off the writing process for him. But before he can do this, he has to make a journey. On his travels, there are a number of waypoints where he must stop and collect materials which are pasted into the book.

One early winter’s morning, a teenage boy is found lying outside the gates of a monastery. The monks take him in, and eventually, in terrible distress, he tells them that he has killed his father. This story follows the life of the boy’s father and the discovery the boy makes about his father’s past.
