Edward McKendree Bounds (1835-1913) was an author, attorney, and Methodist pastor. In The Weapon of Prayer, Bounds explains the necessity and the realities of prayer. The Essentials of Prayer is a classic on prayer written for the layman in which Bounds discusses the parts of prayer.

Alfred Edersheim (1825-1889), a Jewish convert to Christianity, was a Biblical scholar and author. Thomas Watson (c. 1620 - 1686) was an English Puritan preacher and author. The Lord's Prayer is the third volume in his series of books explaining the tenets of the Christian faith, the first being The 10 Commandments and the second The Apostle's Creed. Watson provides a lengthy and in-depth exposition of each concept or verse of the familiar prayer from Matthew 6. Charles Grandison Finney (1792-1875) was a Presbyterian minister and a leader of the Second Great Awakening in the United States. He has been called “The Father of Modern Revivalism”. These powerful lectures deal with religious revival, how to encourage or promote it, and explaining how a revival experience may be maintained in the life of the Christian and in the life of the church. The author considered a religious revival as a new beginning of obedience to God.

David Brainerd (1718-1747) was a missionary to the Native Americans in Delaware, New York, New Jersey, and Eastern Pennsylvania. Edited by the eminent Puritan theologian and Preacher Jonathan Edwards, The Life and Diary of David Brainerd (1749) became a source of inspiration and encouragement to many Christians, including the theologian John Wesley and missionaries such as William Carey and Jim Elliot.  

Dwight Lyman Moody (1837-1899) was an evangelist, author, and publisher associated with the Holiness Movement. In How to Study the Bible, he discusses the reasons why Bible study is so important for Christians. Recognizing the differences between individuals, he offers a variety of different methods for doing so. There are sections on observation, interpretation and application of the texts and the author also offers the tools for understanding the difficult passages in the scriptures.

Frederick Brotherton Meyer (1847-1929) was a Baptist pastor and evangelist in England involved in ministry and inner city mission work on both sides of the Atlantic. He was a friend of D. L. Moody and A. C. Dixon, and the author of numerous religious books and articles. Referring constantly to scripture in "The Secret of Guidance", Meyer calls on believers to examine their inner motives, to consider how they ought to be receptive to God’s guidance. The book emphasizes spiritual formation and the practical application of Christian precepts in daily life.  

Published in 1791, Thomas Paine’s The Rights of Man defended the French Revolution’s values of freedom, equality, and brotherhood. He argued that a government based on justice ought to support mankind’s civil rights relating to security and protection, as well as the natural rights to life, liberty, and freedom of conscience. He also proposed plans for universal education, pensions, poverty relief, and social welfare in this classic work that was widely read across the West.

Charles Finney (1792-1875) was a Presbyterian preacher known for his revival services and extemporaneous preaching. He also dealt with social issues and was an abolitionist. In 1835, Finney was appointed as a professor of theology at Oberlin College; he became its president in 1851. Sermons on Gospel Themes is a collection of his sermons, including 24 delivered at Oberlin College between 1844 and 1861. They were taken down in shorthand while Finney preached them, and submitted to him for correction or addition.

Fifty Years on the Trail is the true story of John Young Nelson (1826-1903), an early frontiersman, military scout, interpreter, guide, and saloon owner. Nelson ran away from home as a young teenager to adventure in the west. He worked on farms, served as a cabin boy on a Mississippi steamer, and became an apprentice with a group of traders traveling west from Missouri. After meeting a band of Sioux, he got himself adopted into the tribe, learned how to live off the land and became a Sioux warrior.
