Dan Baker is loved by most in the small town of Jerrod, Texas. Everyone except Virgil Hooper. It is home for multiple generations of men or women with few opportunities to break the bonds with land, family, and hometown. Kilborn focuses on a third-generation native son, Drake Kilborn. Under his father’s tutelage, he learned to pilot spray planes in his youth.

1840s, action-packed adventure, with a goodly dollop of humor and romance. Fact: In the spring of 1840, a hodge-podge "army" of not very scrupulous mountain men, Mexican bandidos, and 200 Ute Indian warriors, swept down on Mexico's, Alta California. In the vicinity of El Pueblo de Los Angeles, these "brigands" gathered up and drove away, some three to five thousand prime-quality horses and mules! Little more is recorded of this event, and all sources vary wildly concerning the specifics.

This novel is a slightly irreverent, fast-paced, fun adventure set in the 1830s. It features a host of genuine characters including: missionaries, mountain men, Southern belles, ladies of the night, aboriginal beauties, runaway slaves, traveling troubadours, any number of scalawags, and several Indian Nations. Based on actual events and several real persons of that era, it contains mortifying, hair-breadth escapes and well-deserved comeuppances throughout.
