At age 50, AnnMerle Feldman was a single mother juggling a demanding academic career while trying to make sense of her deep exhaustion and chronic pain. As a university researcher, teacher, and administrator, she was determined to find evidence-based answers. This exploration to reclaim her vitality began with a simple question: Why does my body hold onto so much stress, and how can I heal it? In her search, AnnMerle discovered the healing power of intentional, body-centered, self-healing practices. She initially immersed herself in yoga, but soon realized that it wasn’t addressing her nervous system’s level of burnout—especially after decades of stress, overwork, and sitting had left her body’s fascia (the connective tissue that supports movement and feeling in the body) rigid and dehydrated. She soon noticed a similar pattern in her achievement-oriented clients. These hard-working women were being told that this stiffness was the inevitable result of aging. Recent research on fascia confirms that this couldn’t be further from the truth. One’s tight fascia can be rehydrated and restored through myo-fascial self-massage, which activates a woman’s body-centered, self-healing capacity. AnnMerle’s breakthrough ignited a vision of women over 50 healing themselves through myofascial self-massage, profound breathwork, deep rest, soul-centered strength, and woman-centered connection. These five pathways came together to form her Body Vitality Method—a radical yet sustainable approach that empowers women to restore their vitality and trust their body’s natural, intuitive wisdom. Through her work, including her online community, The FierceOver50 Gathering, AnnMerle encourages women to leave superficial, costly self-care behind and activate their bodies’ self-healing capacities so they can reclaim their vitality by healing from within, reconnecting with their bodies, and rediscovering their inner strength. AnnMerle lives with her husband, Bob Meyerhoff, in Deerfield, Illinois, where they are proud parents to four children and six grandchildren (and counting!). She is Professor Emerita of English at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
