Bernard Smith was a specialist teacher of the blind until taking early retirement December 2010 in order to finish writing and editing 'Touching the World'. Sadly Cathy was diagnosed with breast cancer within weeks of their return and it became terminal. The couple were married immediately after Cathy's palliative care was completed and she died 165 days later on 31st January 2013 in Warrington (Cheshire, UK). The book of the journey was brought forward for publication so that she knew a promise Bernard had made years earlier had been fulfilled. Everybody involved in its production were, and still are to this very day, very proud of the story and the journey they undertook. As a literary critic once stated 'There can only ever be one first, and this is it". Cathy was, and continues to be, Bernard's sun and moon. It will always be so. Currently there is no doubt he will be riding the same bike somewhere in the world. It is all he has done since Cathy died.
