CJ Rutherford was born in 1968 and grew up on his granddad's farm in Donegal, in the very rural west of Ireland, mostly left to his own devices. So he did what any imaginative kid with too much time does: he built a world of his own and filled it with fairies and every kind of monster a lonely farm could conjure after dark.

Later came the Royal Air Force, and years spent traveling the world in the course of his duties. Then came two daughters, and with them a proper audience at last. They never knew, when he sat down to tell a bedtime story, whether they'd spend the night fighting a dragon or making friends with one.

The girls grew up. The stories didn't. So CJ found a new way to tell them.

These days he writes across a wide range, from the all-ages adventure of the Tales of the Neverwar series, where magic and science collide across two worlds, to darker, grittier fiction written for grown-up readers. What ties it all together is the thing that started on that farm in Donegal: characters worth caring about and worlds worth getting lost in. He still isn't quite sure whether tonight's tale ends in a battle or a friendship, and honestly, that's the fun of it.
