A well-known author of historical fiction, Carla is the author of a current 50 novels and several non-fiction works, plus numerous short stories and articles. She is the recipient of two RITA Awards from Romance Writers of America for Best Regency of the Year; two Spur Awards from Western Writers of America; three Whitney Awards from Storymakers; and a lifetime achievement award from LDS in Publishing, Media and the Arts. Carla's interest in historical fiction is a byproduct her lifelong study of history. She's held a variety of jobs, including medical and hospice public relations, feature writer and columnist for a North Dakota daily newspaper, university professor, and ranger/historian with the National Park Service. Interest in the Napoleonic Wars on land and sea (mostly sea) has led to numerous novels about the Royal Navy. She has also written novels set in Wyoming during the Indian Wars (her historical specialty); in early twentieth century ranching in Wyoming; and coal mining in Utah. Perhaps Carla is best known for her Regency romances that have been dubbed "dukeless Regencies," because she prefers to write about more ordinary people during that era. Only partly joking, she credits much of her writing ability to high school journalism in a small South Texas high school. "Our journalism teacher was the meanest teacher I ever knew," she says. "She made us actually learn something."
