In the 80s, I spent my high school class time writing for my friends who would grasp eagerly at my Hilary notebook at lunch to read the next installment of my version of a young adult crime thriller. Back in class, my teachers would tell me to pay attention, but how could I when I was meeting my "fans" after school in the smoking area--and they were hungry readers. It makes me laugh now, but that was an impressionable time. It made me feel... authentic. My Writing Craft teacher caught on to my distractions and gave me "The Outsiders" by S.E. Hinton ensuring I knew the author had written the book when she was 16. It takes a lifetime of little events like these to convince someone they can do the incredible--in my case, be an author. And...a teacher. I spend my days teaching at-risk youth, and my evenings and weekends writing about at-risk youth, sometimes all "grown-up"... still struggling, overcoming, trying to hold on to hope and achieve their dreams. I can't put into words how satisfying writing is to me. And when I read book reviews and book blogs on my stories? I consume the words, the opinions, the pleasure readers derived from my writing, just as I did in the school yard, so many years ago.
