Clara began writing and illustrating for children when her own daughters were small. Her mum is Shirley Hughes: as the saying goes, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. When she was little she was given her mum’s paints to use up at the end of the day, which she remembers was like scraping the icing from the bowl after making a cake. She has created over thirty books, including picture books such as Martha and the Bunny Brothers, Lucky Wish Mouse and Picking Pickle, and two illustrated fiction series, Dotty Detective and Marshmallow Pie. She has also collaborated with Polly Faber on Mango & Bambang and with Shirley Hughes on Dixie O’Day. When not at her drawing board or staring out of the window dreaming up her next idea, Clara loves to sew her own clothes, listen to true crime podcasts, and walk by the river with an ice cream.
