Call me crazy -- all my Thai friends do: my nickname is "Farang Ba", which means Crazy White Foreigner. Crazy because, at 55, I'm still actively competing as an amateur boxer, against opponents half my age, in Thailand, where I have lived for the last 13 years and which I now consider home. Crazy also because, before I rush into the phone booth to transform into Farang Ba, I'm a lawyer -- Yale, Harvard Law School, the works. And Crazy, most of all, because I am a colon cancer survivor (15 years now), and beneath my boxing trunks there is an ileostomy pouch, which is a rough substitute for my colon, which was removed. Unlike most expats, I revel in getting to know the local culture and making local friends. I speak serviceable Thai (not an easy task) and have traveled -- and fought -- all over Thailand, more often than not the only foreigner in sight. As a cancer survivor I feel as though I won a second chance at life, and I refuse to waste a moment of it. Life is an adventure -- let's go!
