David Lucas was born in Middlesbrough and grew up Hackney, in east London. Shortly after graduating from The Royal College of Art, he illustrated a picture book by Ted Hughes and began writing picture book stories of his own. His first book as author and illustrator, Halibut Jackson, was greeted by The Financial Times as an "instant classic". He has since written and illustrated eighteen books, translated into twelve languages. His philosophical fable, The Lying Carpet, was described by The New York Times as "a dreamy experience - the language is lovely; the free verse has an offbeat rhythm; the illustrations are breathtaking..." His most recent picture book is Attack of the Giant Baby, illustrated by Bruce Ingman - the only book he has written but not illustrated. He lives with his wife and daughter in an old school house, in Leytonstone, London.
