Doreen Lenz Holte is a professional writer and author who was inspired to write "Voice Unearthed: Hope, Help, and a Wake-Up Call for the Parents of Children Who Stutter" after experiencing years of unsuccessful therapy for her own son. Her original intention was to write a book that would help parents (including herself)navigate through treatment options and become more effective advocates for their children. The book intention changed after Holte's research revealed an alarming degree of uncertainty, discord, and lack of evidence behind the current approach promoted by universities and sanctioned by the American Speech, Language, and Hearing Association. "Voice Unearthed" helps readers understand the evolution of an approach that focuses on using speech techniques to manage stuttering behavior in children and why it has been so widely embraced in the face of dismal outcomes. Both Holte and her son, Eli, share parts of their own journey to help readers understand the harm that can be done and the toll the approach can take on a child’s ability and willingness to communicate.
