I am an active entrepreneur and company builder: active as an executive, investor, mentor, advisory and board member at the intersections of information security, computer science, machine learning, SaaS, and finance. I am likely best known for co-founding eSentire (a leading global cybersecurity Managed Detection and Response company). I have a Bachelors of Mathematics in Computer Science from the University of Waterloo, and in 2019 was the recipient of their J.W. Graham Medal in Computing and Innovation. While working with cybersecurity startups as an Entrepreneur-in-Residence at the Rogers Cybersecure Catalyst, Toronto Metropolitan University it helped dredge up some of the terrors and stresses experienced when starting eSentire. As I was almost reliving their trials along with them I started writing down my own memories and advice - detailing my many blind spots and mistakes I made. I found that even today, most startup books are written by non-technical authors with significant business/financial background (e.g. MBA-holders) and there weren’t that many business books written by tech founders who sorely lacked those specific skills but managed to learn and succeed. To that end, I have written a book titled: COMMITTED: Startup Survival Tips and Uncommon Sense for First-Time Tech Founders. COMMITTED is part raw memoir, part encouraging cheerleader, and part startup founder survival manual. Within I encourage the first-time tech founder to realize how tenuous survival is, accept how unsettlingly low are the odds of success, appreciate how important luck is to your journey, and nevertheless to dig deep and proudly wear the hat of a Chief Survival Officer. Best to acknowledge and embrace the inherent threats, risks, and challenges head-on, prepared with advice and armed with tactics to survive and thrive.
