Hello, my name is Evan Howard Ashford. I was raised in Kosciusko, Mississippi. I am an Assistant Professor in the History Department at SUNY Oneonta and the former Director of the Center for Racial Justice and Inclusive Excellence. I hold 5 degrees, including my Ph.D. in Afro-American Studies from the W.E.B. Du Bois Department of Afro-American Studies at UMass Amherst. My publications include Mississippi Zion: The Struggle for Liberation in Attala County, 1865-1915, Freedom Courts: An Analysis of Black Women’s Divorce in Attala County During Mississippi’s Anti-Divorce Campaign, 1890–1940, and Medical Messiahs: African American Women in Mississippi Medicine, 1900-1940. My honors include the Mississippi History Society Book of the Year Award, the National Council for Black Studies' Anna Julia Cooper and C.L.R. James Award for Outstanding Scholarly Publication in Africana Studies, the Richard Siegfried Junior Faculty Prize for Academic Excellence Award, and the Thurgood Marshall Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Award.
