My obituary is sure to begin with the fact that I won a Pulitzer Prize, so I might as well start there. I earned journalism’s top honor in 2000 while working at the St. Paul Pioneer Press for a series of stories that uncovered academic fraud within the University of Minnesota men’s basketball program. It made me, for a spell, one of the most despised people in the Land of 10,000 Lakes. I still get the occasional email from Gophers fans informing me that I am a jerk. I joined Sports Illustrated a few months after winning the Pulitzer and worked there for more than 14 years as a senior writer. I focused primarily on investigative/enterprise projects, but I also wrote about college basketball, college football and soccer. I am now a senior editor and writer for The Athletic.

Prior to joining the Pioneer Press in 1997, I worked for two years at the Los Angeles Times. I covered USC’s basketball team for one season and broke a few stories, but the majority of my time at that wonderful newspaper was spent answering phones and making copies.
I graduated from Notre Dame in 1995 with a B.A. in American Studies and later earned an MFA in creative writing from the University of San Francisco. I have taught journalism classes at the Graduate School of Journalism at UC-Berkeley, Santa Clara University and Southern Oregon University

I live in Ashland, Oregon, with my family. When I am not writing and reporting, I coach soccer and help run the local soccer club.
