J.A. Carter-Winward is the author of five novels—Falling Back to Earth (Binary Press, 2010, 2017); TDTM (Binary Press, 2010); The Rub—nominated by the Utah Arts and Humanities Council for the 2011-12 Utah Book Award (Binary Press, 2013); Grind—voted one of the “Top-5 Literary Novels of 2015” by IndieReader (Binary Press, 2014), and Wade: A Novel—winner of the 2021 "IndieReader Discovery Award" for Literary Fiction (Binary Press, 2021.) Carter-Winward is the author of two short story collections, Shorts: A Collection (Binary Press, 2014), and The Bus Stops Here and Other Stories (Binary Press, 2018). Most of her books are available in Audible, narrated by the author. Her poetry appears in the following anthologies and publications: Pain and Renewal: A Poetry Anthology, (Vita Brevis Press, 2020); HSTQ Anthology (2018); We Will Be Shelter: Poems for Survival (Write Bloody Publishing, 2014), HSTQ Spring 2017, Winter 2017, and the Spring 2018 editions; Desert Wanderings Literary Journal. Author of the award-winning “No” poetry series—No Apologies, No Secrets, No Regrets (Binary Press, 2013, 2014, 2015), her poetry has been published by a number of literary magazines and journals online and she's a contributing writer for publications on Medium.com. Her latest publication, work in progress. dialogues and poems, examines the most important and unanswered questions of our time through satire and an unflinching scrutiny of the current socio-cultural zeitgeist and the world's major religions featuring poetry and fictional dialogues between "God" and biblical/modern-day luminaries, and others. Coming August 18th, 2021, is J.A.'s new poetry chapbook, If It Stings...that means it's working: a poetry story, a limited-print edition (also available on Kindle.) J.A. has been performing for audiences from the time she was two years old. Since then, she's been a performer and public speaker to audiences throughout Northern Utah in various community, academic, and performance venues. She appeared in Eve Ensler's Vagina Monologues after she was commissioned to write an original monologue for its local theater run in 2015. A visual artist and playwright, Carter-Winward was the recipient of Indie Ogden's "Best Local Artist" award that in 2014, the same year her stage play, The Waiters, was produced locally and nominated for "Best Local Event." Ms. Carter-Winward and her husband are the founders of a non-profit organization called The Black Box Warning Initiative, creating awareness through short films, music, and poetry, about debilitating and/or fatal medication side effects on over 800+ FDA-approved medications. Ms. Carter-Winward has been a pioneer in the healthcare reform arena since 2016 and was a contributing writer for Mad in America: Science, Psychiatry and Social Justice.
