J.J. Meyer is the pen name for the creative partnership of Judith Levey Meyer and John Harrison Meyer. "Midnight Justice" is their first collaboration.
The late Judith Meyer, who died of cancer in July 2026, was a Superior Court judge and a former prosecutor for Los Angeles County. She was the author of The "California Criminal Motions Survival Guide." A number of the incidents in the story were inspired by her experiences on the bench. Others derive from a long career, much like this story’s protagonist’s, of outdoor adventures. Judith Meyer had, in fact, worked as a whitewater rafting guide, emergency medical technician, and on a ski patrol, and was an avid SCUBA diver.
Off the bench, she was a long-time reader of fantasy fiction, especially the vampire novels of Anne Rice.
She lived with her husband Steve (who, unlike the fictional “Wade” in this novel, remains alive and well), in Los Angeles County.
John Meyer, Steve’s uncle, is a professional writer and editor. His long career as a newspaper reporter and editor culminated as managing editor of the Wilmington, North Carolina "Morning Star" and "Sunday Star-News." Since leaving the newspaper, he and his wife Kate have produced two specialized local guidebooks for tourism and wedding planning. Most recently, he has worked as a free-lance ghostwriter, editor, and designer, serving authors of numerous books, both fiction and non-fiction.
His own historical novel "Silver," inspired by some of his Harrison ancestors’ experiences during and after the Civil War, was published in 2023.
Far tamer than his co-author’s, his outdoor adventures are more on the scale of mountain hikes, long bicycle trips, and tidewater exploring in a small boat.
John, Kate, and their son Sam live in Wilmington. His other adult children are sons Chris and Eli Meyer and daughter Robin Campbell.
