Jan Ziegler lives in Pocahontas, Arkansas, a small southern town and agricultural community where the stories of her parents’ struggles with Alzheimer’s unfolded. These struggles are at the heart of her new work of creative nonfiction, Mike and Maxine. A previous book, The Schooling of Japanese American Children at Relocation Centers During World War II, focused on the two Arkansas camps at Rohwer and Jerome; this book was awarded the Adele Mellen Prize for distinguished contribution to scholarship. Jan has also written numerous award-winning articles for Rural Arkansas magazine, in addition to a children’s book, Holly Lolly. She has taught writing, German, and Holocaust studies at Black River Technical College, where she is in faculty emerita status. When not writing or teaching, Jan is a community activist and board member for Gateway CASA, the Eddie Mae Herron Center, and the local Hispanic Services Center.
