Janine Firpo is a seasoned values-aligned investor and social innovator, with a long history of working at the intersection of women and their money. From Apple Computer to the World Bank to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Janine has always found herself making an impact. In 2017 she left a successful 35-year career in technology and international development to focus on how women can create a more just and equitable society through their financial investments. During her career, Janine was often on the crest of what have become massive waves of progress. In 1981 she became a computer programmer in what was a male-dominated, early-stage industry. Then in 1995, she started using technology as a tool for poverty reduction, becoming one of the first business people exploring how to do well financially while also doing good socially. And in 2008, she became one of the first experts in mobile money, a fledgling service that grew from a handful of implementations to an industry with over 1 billion accounts across 95 countries. Now Janine is at the crest of a new wave, as she joins with a group of visionary female leaders who are forging a movement that supports women, their money, and their values. Janine has been on a personal mission to invest all of her assets in alignment with her values for more than ten years. Now she is passionate about helping other women find the knowledge they need to take control of their money, become confident investors, and use their assets to build a better world. In partnership with over 40 financial experts and a larger team of reviewers, Janine wrote Activate Your Money to help women transform their relationship with money and break the taboos related to their financial empowerment. As a lead investor in Next Wave Impact, Janine supports female entrepreneurs and helps train other women to become angel investors. She also chairs the board of Zebras Unite, a non-profit that is developing the capital structures, community, and culture that non-unicorn start-up businesses need to thrive. Early in life, Janine became an avid adventure traveler. She has traveled to or worked in almost 80 countries, with an emphasis on Sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia. She now lives in Northern California with her husband, Mike, and dog, Timon.
