Joseph (Joe) Loizzo, MD, PhD, is a psychiatrist, clinical researcher and meditation scholar-teacher who integrates neuroscience with contemplative practice to help people cultivate personal well-being, interpersonal compassion, and transformational leadership. An Assistant Professor at Weill-Cornell Medical College, his books include Boundless Leadership, Sustainable Happiness, Advances in Contemplative Psychotherapy, and Nagarjuna’s Reason Sixty. After training in medicine and psychiatry at Harvard and completing a Ph.D. in Contemplative Studies at Columbia, he founded the educational non-profit Nalanda Institute for Contemplative Science to support people from all walks of life to cultivate an open mind, warm heart and altruistic way of being, by infusing timeless contemplative science and practice into contemporary life. On faculty at the Iris Cantor Weill Cornell Breast Center, where he offers the Compassion-Based Resilience Training he has refined and tested since 1998, Dr. Loizzo lectures internationally on the role of meditative learning in the future of healthcare, education and leadership and teaches regular public classes and workshops at Nalanda Institute, the Weill Cornell Medical Center, Embodied Philosophy, Menla Mountain Retreat and Tibet House US. He has published dozens of chapters and articles on the neuroscience of meditation in peer reviewed publications including the Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences, Frontiers in Human Neuroscience, Biomed Central, Alternative and Complementary Medicine, Alternative Therapies, the Annual Review of Psychiatry and the Oxford Handbook of Psychiatry. Dr. Loizzo consults individually with health professionals, business leaders, educators and caregivers through his private practice in Manhattan, where he lives with his wife Gerardine and two sons, Maitreya and Ananda.
