John A. Thompson has taught American history at the University of Cambridge since 1971. In that period, he has held Fellowships at the Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington, D.C., the National Humanities Center and the Nitzi School of Advanced International Studies. Over the years, he has supervised many graduate students at Cambridge, including such future scholars as Michael O'Brien, Priscilla M. Roberts, Jonathan Bell and Andrew Preston. As a graduate student in the United States during the Vietnam war, Thompson became interested in the nature of American foreign policy, and particularly internal debates about this. In addition to such books as Reformers and War: American Progressive Publicists and the First World War (1987), Woodrow Wilson (2002), and A Sense of Power: The Roots of America's Global Role (2015), his publications include many articles in scholarly journals.
